So I keep asking around, and I get conflicting answers (one guy even said "huh?!"), so I was hoping you all here at /ck/ could put the issue to rest:
Are potatoes gluten free?

Yes, they aren't grains...

You have the whole internet at your disposal and you come to a site where 25% of the posters unironically think soy sauce is going to give them itty bitty titties.

Of course they're gluten free you fucking dumbass, but if fried in oil contaminated with gluten they could take on some of those particles.

>> No.10350790

Yes they are gluten free, they are not a grain.

Potato fries are sometimes coated in flour batter that makes them more crispy. The flour is sometimes made from wheat. Check the ingredients list if you can.

If anything else containing gluten goes in the same oil your fries go in the oil will contaminate your food.

No, potatoes grow on trees like walnuts do, but the limbs hang down into the ground like a peanut tree does so they develop underground. It is the soil that leaches out the gluten naturally. Hydroponic potatoes are the ones that are grown in pools instead of in soil so they don't have gluten leached out yet. If you want your hydroponic potatoes to be gluten free, you need to put them in some soil and store them in a brown paper bag in your fridge for 1 month. Then toss out the soil any place you don't want contaminated with gluten.

Breading usually contains flour, numbnuts.

Things which contain gluten: wheat, barley, rye.
Anything made FROM wheat, barley, or rye will ALSO have gluten in it.

Couscous is made from flour, btw. Oh, and Oats and barley are harvested at the same time, so they are often stored adjacent. Unless your oats/oatmeal is certified gluten free, about 1% of it is barley.

Shit people usually miss by not checking ingredients:
malt/malt flavoring
soups (flour thickener is super common)
commercial bullion and broths
cold cuts (gluten is a binding agent)
French fries (often dusted with flour before freezing)
processed cheese (e.g., Velveeta)
mayonnaise
ketchup
malt vinegar
soy sauce and teriyaki sauces
salad dressings
imitation crab meat, bacon, etc
egg substitute
tabbouleh
sausage
non-dairy creamer
fried vegetables/tempura
gravy
marinades
canned baked beans
cereals
commercially prepared chocolate milk
breaded foods
fruit fillings and puddings
hot dogs
ice cream
root beer
energy bars
trail mix
syrups
seitan
wheatgrass
instant hot drinks
flavored coffees and teas blue cheeses
meatballs, meatloaf communion wafers
veggie burgers
roasted nuts
beer
oats (unless certified GF)
oat bran (unless certified GF)
