10455351 No.10455351 [Reply] [Original]

Hi all, a few years ago me & my GF (now wife) had this dilemma. We were college athletes and it was 2 years after graduation. We had both put on about 40 lbs and were embarassed to go to a reunion with old friends who used to be on the heavy side because they knew us as the "fitness couple" and we used to make (innocent) jokes about their weight and they had all managed to get thin/fit since college.

Well the awkward dinner was enough motivation to get back on our old workout plans and we took off the slippers and put away the sweatpants for a solid year and were back pretty much to our college physiques.

But eventually we ended up agreeing that the amount of discipline and self deprivation that was involved wasn't worthwhile long term and it's not like we compete anymore

So fast forward to now 4 years after that first reunion and we just had another one. As we tell people who ask "we put on our sweatpants and slippers again" We're each about 100 lbs from our college weights now rather than 40 and everyone else from the group regained the weight as well. We're still bigger than them now, but dinner wasn't awkward like last time and we all stayed at the restaurant for hours this time.

I'm not saying we're proud of this. We'd love to be able to run the court like we did in college. But we could never enjoy a dozen Krispy Kremes while we were training and Haagen Dazs is the 8th wonder of the world. We know we're out of shape, but 1)we're enjoying ourselves and 2)there's delicious food everywhere on the street and in stores and unless you make yourself miserable it doesn't seem like you can stay skinny.

[Also, just a side comment. I know fat storage in different places affects your health differently. So before anyone suggests that our health is at risk, I have some belly fat but also a lot on my rear end. And my wife has belly fat too but the vast majority of it is on her butt/thighs, so in terms of placement I don't think it's necessarily terrible healthwise.]

>> No.10455378

You are retarded. It doesn't matter where you store your fat, being overweight increases your chance of so many diseases/cancers, it doesn't matter.

Healthy food can taste amazing if you know how to cook. You don't need to indulge on a dozen donuts to enjoy what you eat. I also eat haagen dazs and what ever I feel like, I just eat moderately and have it occasionally.

Also rye bread (and it comes from a guy who doesn't rly give a shit about healthy food n such). Same as barley, it just doesn't go well some stuff. I don't understand this attitude at all. It's not hard to do better than fast food at all. You don't need to be "a pro". You just need to have basic skills and the ability to follow directions. And those directions have never been more widely avialable than they are today. Any schmo can bust out his or her smartphone and have world-class experts explain how to prepare whatever meal they might want.

You act like improving upon fast food is only possible for experts. Hell no. A 10 year old with a little experience can stomp the shit out of any fast food meal, mainly because home cooks don't have the same sort of limitations that fast food places do (ingredients purchased in bulk, food reheated rather than freshly prepared, and so on).

Fast food doesn't "taste good". It's barely fucking passable. It is, however, a boon to the lazy who can't be bothered to fire up the stove or grill.

sure, you can. but it's a lot less likely because if you are doing the work yourself then you actually have to put forth some effort to get fat. If you cook from scratch and you want four hamburgers then you have to form more patties, cook more patties, prep the other ingredients, etc. That's a lot more work than driving your fatmobile up to the drive-thru and ordering more food.

the fact that more effort is required is a good thing. it discourages eating excessive quantities.

Doughnuts are easy. Mix batter in a bowl with a whisk. Deep fry when you're done. I normally make round doughnuts because that's easier, but if you want the proper doughnut shape then you can buy a utensil which does that. You don't even need a "deep fryer". Oil in a pot with a thermometer clipped to the side works great.

Reese's cups? I'm not sure why you would want to duplicate those. The chocolate and "peanut butter" are both shit tier quality. But you could easily make a similar snack--make a peanut butter dough and coat it in melted chocolate. This is a great example of how you can do so much better than the industrial version because you would be using better ingredients.

You need to fix your mindset. It's all WASTE that's been carefully crafted to make you addicted and pay a high markup.

Bullshit. Bakeries and restaurants are in business to MAKE MONEY. They will cut corners wherever possible, which includes skimping on the quality of food. The only reason your mind might think it tastes better is because they have teams of scientists devoted to tricking you into thinking so in a variety of ways.

The trouble with food is that 99% of the things that you should be buying are commodities, which means that there is zero profit opportunity. Large corporations need to sell you crap to keep their coffers full, health be damned.

Nah. You don't get obese by eating, you get obese by eating too much. These fuckers find a delicious home cooked meal, they'll make shit tons of it and eat it in one sitting. That's what obese people do.

Im sure you could replicate it exactly. Modernist Cuisine can help you get that industrial texture. And I'm sure you can duplicte the chocolate by starting with real stuff and diluting it with various adulterants. Or maybe by starting with really cheap candy.

I'm just not sure why you would want to. My original point was how it was possible to do BETTER than mass-produced food. Why duplicate shitty industrial chocolate made for the lowest-common-denominator when you can make something better suited to your taste?

You poor shell of a man, your wife sapped you of so much and you don't even have the ability to recognize this truth. I take comfort in knowing you will continue to decline in your physicality until your death rapidly approaches. A short life would normally be sad but in your case mercy is the best course.

Food science is basically the science of replacing your quality ingredients with something cheaper.

It's why you can't get eggs, pancakes or hashbrowns that have been cooked in butter at 99% of restaurants. They use the cheaper alternative.

You are both addicted to suggar and food additives. Sugar messes with your gut , the additives work normaly directly in your brain.
You propably have stored a ton of toxins in your body with your fat, too.
If you realy want to get rid of that addiction just fast 3 weeks. (get a proper instruction for that to not feel like shit).
The fasting is NOT for wheightloss but to get rid of addiction and to acctualy taste food again. Afterwards its fairly easy to change your eating habbit as most "delicous" food will taste like the crap it is. (If you only stop eating large amounds of sugar after 4 weeks most cockies taste unbearably sweet).
I guess you know the basics of homecooking. You can even keep the pasta, just swich it for whole grain. With most sauces it doesnt make a difference in taste.
So yes, it is possible. Get rid of your addictin like one gets rid of smoking cigaretts.
And for gods sake, stop negativly encouraging yourself in that addiction.
I guess noone wants the long term health problems of food addiction when aging.
(joint problems, no stamina, sweating like mad, diabetes and so on, you get that regardless where the fat is stored)

Maintaining a healthy weight takes self control and disclipine, its not insanely hard, EATING is an active process, you dont gain weight sitting on your ass eating a single pack of crisp, you either eat an obscene amount of unhealthy food (exceeding TDEE a lot) or you've spent years consistently overeating your TDEE by a a small amount (weight gain over years e.g. extra 200 kcals a day would be 20 pounds of weight a year)

Sugar is in everything. Insulinemia causes you to store all calories as fat.

Want to lose weight? Eat these
>White Rice
>Lean beef, chicken, or pork
>Vegetables with color (spinach, asparagus, etc)
>salt, pepper, and dry spices
>Olive oil

Limit your portions and your stomach will shrink. Drink at least 1/2 gallon of water per day for hydration.

Exact same. Granted my job is semi-physical, so my actual calorie needs hover around 2200, but I eat like shit between 2 1/2 very fibrous, watery meals.
Staples include 6 oz. fried chicken caesar salad with reduced fat dressing (sometimes walut oil and vinegar), mini wheat off-brand, large bowl of oatmeal with dry fruit and nuts, sardines with crackers and thin, very thin slices of gourmet cheese, salmon and greens...you get the idea.
On a typical day, I eat two or three doughnuts, fistfulls of chips and candy on my loading dock, and keep a somewhat muscular 22.5 bmi.

I went to a diner the other day for brunch. I ordered steak, eggs, and a broccoli/cauliflower mix. The waitress thanked me for telling her I was uninterested in the home fries and toast. You don't have to eat human dog food. Even at a fast food place, it's not hard. Say no to the fries. Throw the bun to the birds. Drink unsweetened coffee or tea. Sugar and grains are pushed on people because they're cheap, and they leave you wanting more. Just say no. None of this will stop you from engaging in eating as a social activity.
