I think it's at least partially stigmatized so people don't take up a booth for 1 on a busy day. But nobody cares especially in the smartphone era. I go out alone and sometimes I pretend I'm doing it in the memory of my late sister/father/mother/cat, because no one knows shit.

Only insecure people feel bad about eating and drinking alone. I was out for lunch with some colleagues and this woman was like "OMG is that guy eating alone?"
I said "Nothing wrong with eating alone. I enjoy a little solitude every once in a while." She started getting defensive and was like "I-I'm too busy to eat alone, haha."

I usually take a book or magazine to read while I eat alone.

Sometimes I take a laptop instead and get a little work done.

My summer 2017 internship mentor knows the chef at a restaurant called Kajitsu in New York (http://kajitsunyc.com/).). As a gift he gave me a reservation at the place (difficult to get apparently?) and paid for two tasting menus, $250 total. "Find a girl and have some fun" he said

Despite an entire summer of going to bars every weekend and trying to talk to people, going to meetups almost every day after work and trying to make friends (with both guys and girls) and not making a single friend the entire fucking time, I gave it a last shot and went to a nice cocktail bar my boss recommended to find someone. Girl my age sits next to me, we chat for ~20 minutes about poetry and art history. I explain the situation and ask her if she wants to go with me to Kajitsu with me. She literally laughs at me and says no thanks, downs her drink and leaves. Bright side is bartender gave me another glass of absinthe for free after seeing that.

Anyway so I end up going to the restaurant alone. Was very depressing. I ate alone almost every day that summer but usually it was in casual restaurants, but here every table had a couple being super romantic. At least the food was pretty good.
