First off, start tipping if you haven't already. If you can afford that $20 ethnic plate you sure as hell can afford to tip the guys who give you it. I recommend 18% as a baseline.

Secondly, employers need to increase the minimum wage. Period. It simply does not translate to the cost of living in 2018.

And FWIW, in 15 years of chain restaurant management, I've never seen anyone actually spit in food. Saw one guy try to stink palm a drink and three other waiters immediately stopped it. Guy was fired on the spot.

Not saying it doesn't happen, just that it's very, very, rare.

Just don't act like an asshole when you go out and you should be fine.

10 years in the industry and I can say the same thing, even when I was a teenager and worked with other teenagers I never saw anyone fuck with food. I've seen negligence of common sense health and safety but never intentional, just idiots doing stupid things.

Fucking hell. I'll give %20 to a REALLY phenomenal waiter. Like my drink was never empty and they brought out my food fast and hot. I've only had a few waiters that truly deserve %20. I'll give credit where it'd due, and most waiters are just ok.
