Everything I've tried from them has been good. Though haven't had anything else from shit tier.

You'll find beer you don't like and beer you like from everyone on the list (except for absolute pleb tier). Just avoid spending less than $1/12oz and try some until you find a style/brand you like. Maybe find a beer you can stand from absolute pleb tier if you go out to drink with friends or something as a backup.

Pic-related is a far better chart. Style's more important than brand.

Does anyone else think Lagunitas is just going for the "thanks craft beer for making my alcoholism look like a neat hobby" crowd? Can't go wrong with them and mostly high abv brews. Though I've noticed there's a distinct taste that's common with all their beers. It's easy to spot with Sakitumi, which just tastes like sake with patented Lagunitas flavoring.

>Dude! I love craft beer!
>IPAs are the best! the hoppier, the better!
it's basically led most of these breweries to target that audience, thus causing a massive influx of "hop explosion" beers, basically made for people who don't know any better. i still occasionally drink IPAs, but lean more towards the imperials or ones that showcase the nuances of different hops, not the hop-smoothies with an abv.

Not really. The manors would make different strength beers out of one mash. The first sparge was the equivalent of a barleywine with high abv and put up for holidays and special occasions. The second sparge was the everyday beer for the family and guests and was probably @ 4-6%. The third sparge was a weak beer, probably 1% or lower and was for the servants because they couldn't be trusted to drink in moderation. So if your ancestors were servants, that's the level beer they drank.

Technically speaking, any amount of alcohol will raise your chances of cancer and other drinking-related diseases, simply because it and its toxic byproducts damage cells, so there is no 'safe' level. However, it's not a significant increase, as long as you drink in moderation, i.e. well under the recommended drinking guidelines, which is 14 units in the UK (6 pints of 4% ale/lager) and 14 standard drinks in the US (248 ml of alcohol).

Very subjective, but it's also hard to tell because I'm not going to look up every beer's distribution map. Seeing Bell's in "The Best" is pretty fucking laughable; whoever made that list is obviously a flyover. The "Everything but my barrel aged...because I sold out" is pretty spot on, but Sierra Nevada is leagues above New Belgium and Sam Adams. Stone and Green Flash should both be moved up a tier; Bell's should be moved down a couple tiers, and The Bruery, Firestone, and Founders shouldn't be considered the best. I wouldn't. Contrary to popular opinion putting your beer in a secondary isn't necessary unless you are really anal about cleaning up particles in your beer (hop residue, yeast aggregate, etc). You can dry-hop or add fruit in your primary. In fact I rarely secondary anymore because I feel it oxygenates the beer unnecessarily. You can leave beer sitting on the yeast trub for 2-3 months without adding off flavors.

I'm a mod (currently off-duty) and I intend to report this thread to my superiors. This sort of discussion should not take place on the /ck/ board as discussion of alcoholism does not fall into our stringent enforcement rules which dictate that conversation deviating from food or cooking (despite exceptions) is not allowed.

Because such threads tend to devolve into boring stories with no punchline and ad hoc fallacies, and also because literally every-fucking-thing else is about fast fucking food and whether Five Guys is better than In-N-out, I request that you cease and desist. I won't ask you a second time. I was just hired yesterday and I intend to make this board what it deserves to be. No more /alck/, no more fast food.

COOKING is 50% of the board title. Cooking is less than 16.666667% of the board content. We need to fix this, and we need to fix it today.

Really wanna hit:
3 Floyds

New Glarus
Surly
Hammerheart
and maybe stock up on some BCBS/variants.

Indeed's wooden soul series is worth checking out. Bottled or at the taproom. If you can tour Schells in new ulm its fascinating and they have a dope tap room and sour program. Bent paddle, castle danger, blacklist are all great north shore breweries and if you do end up near Duluth, thirsty pagan is a good brewery/pizza place in superior wisconsin.
Oh and back near Minneapolis you should check out fair state as well. Boom island and lakes and legend are cool too

If you want a quick retail experience while passing through stop at Woodmans grocery stores. They have amazing liquor departments with massive and relatively cheap beer selections. There is one in Kenosha right over the border from Illinois, and more the Milwaukee suburbs and in the Madison area

If you have time Good City, Black Husky and Third Space are probably the best tap room stops in Milwaukee. Lakefront is also a cool old school craft brewery and has a really fun tour. Best liquor store in the city is Discount Liquor on the south side. Best beer bar to stop at is probably Burnhearts.
Also on the way out of town Raised Grain is a good stop just off 94 in the suburbs.

In Madison, definitely make sure to stop at Funk Factory if you are into sour beer. New Glarus is about 40 minutes south of Madison off the interstate. A great place to stop if time but a bit out of the way. Ale Asylum and Karben4 are other good breweries in town

As for retail beers from breweries not directly on your route, definitely pick up any Central Waters or 3 Sheeps 4 packs. Also basically any New Glarus 4 pack is worth a buy

Look up one of the hundreds of homebrew suppliers and forums. Homebrewing is easy as fuck, just start with kits/concentrates and adjuncts (spraymalt etc) until you have a good feel for fermentation, then start branching out.
Plus, fuck the revenuers.

You could spend 3 days touring breweries in Wisconsin on your way to MPLS and not see them all. We live in glorious times...

Milwaukee Brewing Company's tour is a good time too...basically 90 minutes of all you can drink. Lakefront's tour is good too, but not quite as much free beer. I went to the Miller Brewing tour for the first time last year and it was interesting. Definitely not like a craft brewery tour; there are a few very historic areas and some modern "beer factory" places. Still it's free.

The New Glarus brewery is the most beautiful brewery I've had the privilege to tour and depending when you go, you may be able to get some limited edition stuff in their beer store.

If you spend a lot of time in Madison, the Essen Haus is a traditional stop that usually has ~10 imported German beers they serve in liter mugs or boots. The Malt House in Madison has the biggest selection of Belgian beers I've ever seen with Brasserie V a close second. The tour at Vintage Brewing in Madison closely resembles looking through a window, but I really like their beer. Capital Brewery has a very nice beer garden, and Wisconsin Brewing Company makes good stuff too.

Great Lakes distributes into Wisconsin, but you could drink for a week on in-state beers and not go thirsty.
