The shorter the pieces are, the worse they're going to coil around your fork, and it's going to be downright impossible if they're too short.

Anyone who calls spaghetti "spaghettti noodles" unironically deserves to be hanged from a lamp post. Also the twist/release method is the correct one, with gentle downwards pressure to splay the spaghetti into the outer ring of the pan, and using a spoon as a socket for your fork is encouraged, as it lends itself to neat, easily mouth sized portions of spaghetti each time.
