US public schools operate on the lowest common denominator. What is that? impoverished melanin enriched crotchfruit. It all boils down to numbers; illegals and poors contribute something like $300 a year to the school system, but it costs the system $8000 a year per kid to "teach" and feed them. Why we're feeding kids in school is one of the reasons its failing. Drop the food aspect and it'd cost significantly less.

I went to a sectarian Taoist private school in Taiwan and I remember the cafeteria food fondly. Fried tofu, root vegetable puree, and steamed rice. Basically prison food. But prison food in Asia is often of high quality.

Studies show the milk goes into the garbage daily, as does whole fruit, and wholesome things. There has to be a sneakiness when it comes to hiding healthy things in plain sight..kids simply never get hungry enough to clean a plate, and don't care if they starve. Kids only eat what they want to eat, period. At some point nutrition goals over having them down a carton of milk win over all else (over calories, fructose, preservatives, processed, habits, etc). Kids who don't eat well act the F up during classes too, scoring poorly on tests and going into full oppositional defiance level trouble. It's best they eat their free provided breakfast and lunch each day as provided, pop tarts and chocolate milk, sugary carrots, sugary apple compote and all, because their parents won't be packing anything for them and they would rather trade candy than eat a whole apple most of the time.

I was lucky that I went to a High School that had several nice restaurants of various types within a block, some having lunch specials just for students. Besides the usual fast food fare there was this nice Greek place that served awesome gyros, an Italian restaurant that was decent, and a pizzeria. Shit was awesome.

I went to Japan as a chaperone for a school field trip. We ended up touring one of the high schools and ate lunch there. The stuff they served was more nutritional and tasted a whole lot better. The only difference is that their lunch was 300 yen, and American school lunches are free in many schools. So I guess there would be lower quality. They served us pork cutlet bowls.

Same reason schools still get to keep vending machines on campus. Not to mention the students actually defend these places and things in lieu of the the alternatives posted here, which, for the record, are mostly found so horribly in some of the poorest regions of the states, like Alabama and Kentucky, and those flyover states like Iowa and Idaho.
