I always ask for a table "for two" with a meaningful look in my eyes.

After about 5 minutes I start looking annoyed. After 10 I play with my phone while rolling my eyes. Then I explain very carefully to the wait staff that someone has been very rude but nevertheless I shall deign to eat there by myself.

I have yet to be mistreated using this strategy. For some reason, it works.

No, they have no way of knowing. I always shower first, and arrive 7-8pm on a weekday, usually Wednesday or Thursday, prime casual first date timing. Dressed kind of nice. I don't obviously peacock b/c nothing trips the defensive grid of a waitress quite like the trappings of a chad, in her mind it needs to come off like a natural occurrence, but I don't look shabby either. I am shooting for "dressed slightly better than she is", and this works. I have observed a lot of waitresses over the years and I have this dialed in like a science.

I always bring wireless headphones with a book on tape or music. I don't know why, but I get the impression that its disarming to a degree. (the thinking is you are distracted by whatever you are listening to, so she will feel more comfortable serving you b/c she thinks you aren't there to experience a connection with another human being, why would I need that anyway when I can just go to the grocery store and make eye contact with the cashier for cheaper, also she need not know that I stopped going there after I tried to ask out the cashier and the manager asked me not to come back)

Anyway I'm very subtle, my overall attitude comes off as, "Whatever, I'm good either way."

When I'm traveling, I have absolutely no issue eating alone anywhere. I prefer to do a hostel/backpacking kind of trip so yeah, I'm usually alone and therefore eat alone.

At home, I am too ashamed to eat alone. I wouldn't do it, to be honest.

What's ironic is that in either situation, nobody knows what's going on in my life. It's purely MY perception of what I imagine other people would think. And the fact of the matter is that nobody would think anything. Of the dozens to hundreds of people you see everyday, do you even notice anything about them at all? Unless they're being annoying or rude or causing a scene, probably not.

The last time i ate alone was a couple days ago at a Norms. It was like at 5:30 in the morning - I woke up at 1 am and couldnt catch any sleep so I decided fuck it lets get the day started.

It was really really pleasant. Nobody else there other than a couple mexicans and one white dude wearing motorcycle gear. Enjoyed my omelet and hotcakes with a ton of coffee, had a smoke. 10/10.

The thing is though a lot of places are not like this, especially the busy/trendy ones, its less about the food after all and more about the social experience. So eating there by yourself would most certainly be weird.
