Just out of curiosity I picked up some port at the liquor store. It was a tawney port and it tasted like straight cough syrup. It was disgusting.

I like this but I really haven't tried a whole lot of different ones.

Port unfortunately is one of those things on which you have to shell out the big bucks to properly enjoy. Anything cheaper than £30 will taste like shit basically (unless you live in Portugal). if you can get your hands on a Taylor's 2000 you can thank me later.

PS. Port is a dessert wine and is meant to be enjoyed right after a big meal (in lieu of cake or smth) - you can't expect it to taste good without food because of its sweetness.

Some restaurants are kind of cool in that at the end of a meal even if not ordered they'll bring out a glass or two of Port.

a whisker shy of €2000, give or take. The cost is best shared among 3 or 4 friends (or colleagues) for a special occasion. Lasting memories.

When all the good wine is gone, all that's left is port.
Not only true, but a good way to remember your starboard/port definition.

seriously dude, get off that high horse.
Port is a sweet digestif with a strong alcohol content.
Wine is wine.
Ergo Port is not cheap wine.

got this for my s.o. for a birthday present this year. he doesn't drink much, but he likes port every now and then and it reminds us of the first vacation we took together. i'd just gotten a bonus at work, so it was financially feasible.

this shit is incredible. absolutely incredible.

Lately just olorosso, but I have a dessert sherry called pedro ximinez that's pretty nice in small sips every now and then. I was drinking a palo cortado last year that was so weird, it was kind of tangy and salty like an olorosso but also a bit sweet and mild like a fine, it was like two sherries at once- equally good with salty almonds and with sweet fruit. Ove only had about 3 or 4 different kinds so I'm still new to sherry. What about you?

I don't really drink wine, the last time I drank "wine" it was $6 vermouth and foul $6 nigori sake as I slid into a blackout (at my neighbor's party) and then puked on my bathroom floor. Mostly I'm a liquor/cocktail man (sometimes craft beer)

I'm just saying this would be the thread to discuss european fortified wines

>> No.10764998

>>10764967
Specifically I like mixing because it feels more like a craft/hobby I can put thought and effort into and not a premade product I'm consuming just for the appreciation. Also I know vermouth isn't a "drinking" wine but I was getting rid of it, and the main reason I don't really drink wine is it clocks at a fairly high unit price at low ends compared to liquor/beer (decent liquor at $20 per 16.7 drinks vs pretty bad wine at $6 for 5 drinks) and I'm a poor college student

Here, the especially old ones (and Italian ones) serve you a glass of limoncello out of courtesy.
That or fernet. You know, for digestion. Although I prefer Fernet with coke lol.

No no no. Sherry is fine, as a dessert. You eat a good bbq with wine.
Then you a have a fine sherry with snacks (like salami) while watching Argentinian selection tomorrow.

I never understood the appeal of a random sweet digestif offered by a dodgy waiter. Why would you ruin the crisp after taste of a nice creme brulee by a digestif shot that may or may not turn out good.
