ive been screwed over by the Chinese two too many times. so basically ive ordered chow mein twice and both times ive gotten this thick soup-ish thing with things that look and taste like warm soggy letttuce and the 'chicken' is very rubbery and gross, what is it? am i just retarded when it comes to ethnic food or have they messed up my order. it looked nothing like pic related

Try ordering lo mein instead. Or read their menu, most of the time it'll say "soft noodle" on the one you're trying to order.

Chow mein: napa cabbage, onion, celery, carrot, bean sprouts, sauce based on chicken stock and mustard that is medium thick consistency.

Part of the fun is finding the good spots. You haven't found 'em. Maybe they don't exist in your city for this type of food though. Keep trying new places.
