Is there a bigger meme than wine?
It's literally just grape juice with alcohol and yet people act like it's the fanciest shit ever. The flavor is absolutely pedestrian no matter how expensive the bottle is.

Anyone who spends a lot of money on wine and claims they can tell the difference is lying.

I agree to an extent. There’s little difference between $20 and a $100 bottle.

>> No.10975178

There’s some meme bottles in the $30-$100 range for sure, but what’s wrong with what you describe if it’s $12 a bottle? You can get plenty of fresh, young wines like Malbecs, zinfandels, Sangiovese, or Tempranillo that are absolutely delicious. I stay away from cheap Cabernet, because in my experience they over oak it to hide the cheap quality.

There are very few ok wines for like 5$, but you can find decent ones for like 15-20. I had one for 250 once, it was not really worth it.

Admittedly I was using hyperbole but the general point is a bottle of wine that's hundreds of dollars isn't going to be worlds better than your average joe blow bottle.

There is obviously going to be a difference between cheap 3 dollar wine stored in a box that degrades overtime and changes the taste of the wine. Just like there is a difference between 3 dollar beef and 10 dollar beef.

But there isn't much difference between 10 dollar beef and 300 dollar beef. It's just for pretentious rich assholes to feel like they are above "normal people." Just like Wine.

When something is priced at 3000% more than an average product, then it's not for the "flavor" it's for the prestige. Just like garbage clothing brands like Supreme and Gucci are no better than some cheap shit you can pick up from your local tailor (and in the case of supreme, something you could pick up from walmart).

Ive been trying to get into wine too desu fa.m
Starting at yellowtail since its really cheap. Had some rex goliath and it was surprisingly good too

Does it really make a difference when you match the reds accordingly with specific food?
How would you guys describe it?

I agree with you, but there is still a slight difference between:
- being able to taste every note of a wine, having wine knowledge and the ability to describe it and
- simply knowing if you like a wine or not.

I can not really describe why I like some wines and might mix up the different kinds of wine, but I can still say if I like them or not.

I still think very expensive wines are not worth it though.

>Does it really make a difference when you match the reds accordingly with specific food?
>How would you guys describe it?

I'm sure you have certain food combinations that you like to eat together? Or maybe have a favorite sauce to have with a specific dish? It's no different than that. It is also subjective. Don't think that you MUST pair X food with Y wine just because a book said so or some expert said that was a good match. That can be a starting point to get ideas but there are no hard and fast rules. Drink whatever wine you like with a given meal.

Whiskey is the biggest meme and I fell for it even more today. $70 for a bottle of Whistlepig Straight Rye Whiskey and only to save face while in front of other whiskey drinkers. Probably doesn't top my meme purchase of Jefferson's batch #15 'ship aged' whiskey. Whiskey aged on a fucking ship to give it a more traditional flavor from when they used to ship whiskey down the Mississippi river, through the Gulf of Mexico, and up the Atlantic coast to NY. $70+ a bottle and I can't really tell the difference between it and other whiskeys I've drunk.
