It was my birthday, I was 16 at the time. We went to a diner I used to like, it had very good quality for as long as I remember. We get there and it looks shitty. Nobody but us is there and it's dinner time. We should've left, but I, being stupid, insisted we stayed. The service was awkward. The waitress was a middle aged woman who looked like she'd smoked a lot, she sat down at the table with us. I ordered a burger and fries. It was school cafeteria quality. The fries were even worse somehow, not even salted. She was still there. I said it was my birthday, because I'm a fool who likes free ice cream. The other waitresses came by and sang lacklusterly and there was no ice cream. Shitty place. Only until we exited, I realized the place was under new management. I'm scared as to what the kitchen may've looked like.

I haven't had any really bad dining experiences if we count out my harrowing childhood.
Had to wait 45 minutes for a very mediocre fish & chips in Dublin once. Actually called the waiter over and asked if they had to catch the fish first. He sure proved me wrong on that by serving something that was definitely not caught that day. Or week.

It's not their job. The entire point of fast food joints is that it's served on a tray that you return when your done. Sure, they'll clean up any mishaps, but cleaning up your trash at the table isn't just common courtesy, it's the general procedure for those types of restaurants.

It's the equivalent of putting a shopping cart in the middle of the road, leaving your trash in your seat at the movie theater or not re-racking your weights at the gym. It's pure protocol. These systems were created to be followed, and people who don't are just complete inconsiderate assholes.

This. When I worked at Wendy's, it was the cashier's job to mop and sweep the floors when there were no customers. They don't have time do deal with the customer's bullshit on top of all the other stuff that has to be done. Plus sometimes there are just too many customers to clean up all that stuff. My restaurant had 350 or so customers a day during the busy season and there are no slow hours, just slower hours.

Ordered some kind of over priced burger and after a beer and 25/30 minutes of waiting for it asked the waitress if there's an ETA and she said it was coming right out. Went to a pretty down-to-earth nothing-fancy steak house with some coworkers once. The youngest in the group was a girl of maybe 19 and she clearly thought that acting like a bitch is the cool and mature thing to do in a restaurant.
It was quite atypical for her as well. I'm sure she just thought he was coming off as some kind of mover and shaker she'd seen in a movie once.
Sent back a steak three times because it wasn't cooked enough and eventually got a very well done, but not passive-aggressively burnt, steak which she then chewed on for 40 minutes.
Got a little uppity about the rest of us wanting to leave a tip for the excellent service too.
It was pretty embarassing all in all. Like having a misbehaved child with us.

As someone who's lived in Europe and the US, I can tell you that they're entirely different. Fast food places in Europe generally will bus tables for you, and it's expected as it is actually part of their job. In the US it's different. Not because the workers are lazy, but because it's just not the way it's done here. Capitalism will ensure that the restaurant works on efficiency, not hiring more people for the hell of it. The whole reason fast food is fast in America is the fact that the customer brings his own food to the table and cleans up after himself. That's the entire point. If I was in Europe, it would be different.

I'm not going to go to restaurant A and expect the exact same services I received from restaurant B. And I especially won't say that the people at restaurant A "aren't doing their jobs" because they aren't following the same business model at restaurant B. That's just plain retarded, and people who don't clean their shit are just looking for an excuse to be slobs. And the worst part is that they're smug about it, as if their intellectual superiority has found them a loophole in "the system" and they think they're somehow smarter and above the rest of us by not following protocol. That's retard logic. First off, fast food joints and other bottom-tier part-time wagie plantations already hire more staff than they need so they can use working hours as a carrot/stick for their employees while also buffering against high turnover and the occasional moron who thinks he can negotiate for a raise just because he's an efficient, punctual, and reasonably intelligent worker. Second, even though it's a dick move, it doesn't add a significant enough amount to the workload to justify adding on another shift.
