How would that help? Farming veggies kills animals. Furthermore, the modern idea of buying out-of-season veggies at supermarkets year-round carries with it a massive environmental burden. People see tomatoes on the market shelves in winter and are blissfully unaware of how much harm was done to achieve that.

Developed nations have robust, regulated agricultural (and industrial) sectors. That doesn't mean they can't be improved, not at all, as they can. But it's the undeveloped nations that do not have any means of population control or strong ability to regulate their various industrial and agricultural sectors that are steadily having an increasingly detrimental impact on the global environment.

If you've ever been to those places and saw such issues as uncontrolled deforestation, environmental contamination and pollution, etc. for yourself, first hand, you'd understand how important it is to get those shit holes in check - above and beyond regulating our own markets.

Sure it does. Animals displaced for farm fields. Animals poisoned by herbicides and pesticides. Animals crushed by farm machinery. Animals poisoned to keep them from eating grain and crops in storage. Fertilizer runoff causes algae blooms and fish kills. The simple act of trucking produce around the world so you can eat vegan during the winter causes massive pollution.

Ever seen a gopher gasser? Pic related. This is what farmers use to stop gophers from eating root vegetables. It's like a portable holocaust for farm fields. It takes the exhaust from the little engine onboard, pressurizes it, and pumps it into the ground to kill gophers, moles, voles, and other little cuddly animals that live in fields. It's the vegan version of Hitler's gas vans. No joke. But hey, at least you're not killing a cow, right?

And your computer use isn't?

Let's hear the "mental gymnastics" that you use to justify why you own and use electronics and why you're wasting time on a Bhutanese marquetry forum, when all of that is built on the backs of dead animals.

If you want to reduce the impact your diet has on the world you'd move out in the country and raise your own veggies, some chickens, and a pig. there's a reason people fattened up pigs for the winter: they turn the inedible (to humans) part of your crops into food you can eat during the winter, and eliminating the need for fertilizers, etc, at the same time. There's also no big smoke-belching trucks delivering your food; you get it all pollution-free. I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I bought 4 acres a couple months ago. I missed the spring planting but I'm going to be set for fall. Chickens are already here giving me 4 eggs/day, and they're already shitting up my garden. No artificial fertilizer for me. Right now solar gives me about 70% of my electric needs. I've got a stream on the property that moves pretty fast, I'm trying to see if I can get pico hydro going but I need to see if it keeps flowing for the winter or not.

So tell me anon, what are you doing to reduce your environmental impact?

Not an argument. I unapologetically consume domesticated livestock and crops because it constitutes a balanced, nutrient-rich diet that compliments where one type of food fails. The morality of it is irrelevant. We're higher on the food-chain. It's as simple as that.

The best that can and should be done is to preserve, as much as possible, the environment in the process so that our descendants can also enjoy the cornucopia that we enjoy and because we're just as much a part of the ecosystems we inhabit as anything else. If they suffers, so will we.

It's in Texas. Brazos valley if you want to be specific. The location is actually pretty great, I am located just outside the city limits so it's still very easy to drive to town (multiple nice supermarkets within a 15 min drive). But, since its outside the city there are no zoning restrictions at all.

The property cost $240k, including a ~2000 sq. foot house, a ~1000 sq ft guest house, a pretty damn big shed (800 sq ft), and a workshop (2000 sq. ft). The shed & workshop both have electricity too.

The house dates from the 80s and was built remarkably well. Alas the previous tenant was very slack on maintenance so I've had to do a lot of fixing up. I don't really mind since I was able to leverage that to get 60k knocked off the price (they were asking 300). It's all minor stuff that looked bad at first but no major issues.

Honestly you can get a LOT more land (or a lower price) if you went further out from the city but I like the fact that it's so quick to get to town. Lots of wildlife out here too. I am very much looking forward to deer season.

Why? Slaughtering my pig costs one life. That's a lot less than if I were to buy an equivalent amount of food from the supermarket. The pig has zero transportation (pollution, fuel, etc). Zero packaging to buy and then discard. Zero collateral damage from industrial agriculture, etc. I don't have to burn fuel to drive to the market as much, etc.

Minimizing enviornmental harm is best done with synergy. The (small number) of animals eat the waste from growing crops. The animal's poop fertilizes the crops. The idea is to keep the balance so you need neither fertilizer or animal feed. If you're keeping enough animals that you have to buy feed on a regular basis you're doing it wrong.

I had everything professionally inspected before I bought it. The plumbing in the main house had some issues but I already had it professionally replaced (all of it in the whole house). I had a new roof put on, and I also had the old windows replaced with double glazed too. They were in horrid shape. HVAC was in great shape.

Right now the only animals I am keeping are chickens. They are super low maintenance. There are 6 of them and they get a whole acre just to themselves. Bugs, worms, you name it, they are free to do as they please. I have a photocell on the hen house door so it opens automatically when the sun comes up. I'll have to see if I end up losing any to hawks but so far I haven't had an issue with other predators, just make sure the henhouse is solidly built with no way for things like racoons or foxes to get in.

Like I said I'm planning on getting a pig, but I need to get the pen ready first but I've had more pressing stuff to do (like the electrical wiring nightmare in the workshop).

Isn't the whole point to do as little harm as possible? That pig will die, sure. But the alternative is a lot worse.

You want to talk about casual? right now you and I both are using an electronic system built upon the backs of the dead, yet I'm sure you probably dont give that much thought. Do you consider the toxic waste behind your cell phone when you use it? Or do you use it "casually"?

Everything you do kills, you just have blinders on. And I assure you that my piggo will want for nothing. There will be zero suffering when its life is ended, unlike the myriad critters that will slowly succumb to poisoning from the pollution that your proposed alternative would provide.

Pigs don't have a life, as animals can't own property. They are not consciously aware of their actions impacting their future. They have no hopes or dreams. Animals lack agency and will. Animals are objects of natural forces, not potential subjects of their own destiny.

Veganism is a mental illness. It's not mereley an eating disorder born of orthorexia; it is a manifestation of pathological altruism. Empathy is an evolutionary trait that should be reserved for those you share close genetic resemblance with. It is a method for indirectly spreading your genes by increasing the fitness of your relatives more than the cost to your own fitness multiplied by the level of relatedness. Feeling empathy for an animal, unless it is a pet you have formed a close and personal bond with, is insanity.

Farmer here.

I shoot raccoons, opossums, groundhogs, squirrels, & deer.
I trap raccoons, opossums, groundhogs, squirrels, & voles.
I trap, squish, & poison about a dozen varieties of true bugs, aphids, scales, & other pest insects.
I summon slugs and snails to their deaths in cups of mixed yeast, water, & sugar.

Why? Because, I'm protecting my crops. Even with welded wire fences, fence skirting, and electric lines, animals still are a huge nuisance on the farm. Every year, I kill a few hundred animals and probably around 100k-200k insects & gastropods.

>>11136709
My chickens are free range because they fertilize the orchard and berry patches and get to eat up fallen fruit so it doesn't attract yellow jackets that eat fruit still on the trees. The chickens also eat tons of Japanese beetles and keep the blackberries, grapes, and raspberries relatively free of them. Here's a few of them in coop yard.

Pigs are actually pretty smart. Like most farm animals they do plan for the future. Mostly they know they need to be in x location at x time to get fed or they go hungry. However, some of them are intelligent enough to set up traps to catch food. I once had a pig that would bait field mice with a corn cob then catch and eat the mice.
