ANTI WHISKEY RECOMMENDATION THREAD.

Not for shilling. This is to warn other anons about bad whiskey. Tell us, what was a waste of money for you.

Today i bought a bottle of Glenlivet Founder's Reserve. It was terrible. I thought, hey lets try a single malt, start easy, what could go wrong? A lot, that's what.

Dont buy this. Now tell me what else i shouldnt buy.

Not whisky but Hendrick's Gin isn't worth the price.

On to single malts. I can usually find something to like about any single malt, but tbhwydesu Oban was pretty disappointing. So was Glenlivet's Nadurra.

Probably the worst blended scotch I've ever tasted was Cutty Sark. Smells exactly like nail polish. J&B is the same price and much more palatable.

Stay away from any bottom shelf whisky that's "blended." Those are cheap young bourbons cut with grain alcohol and water.

This was $40 dollars at my local store whereas Laphroaig is $45 and Ardbeg is $50. For $40 this is not at all worth it. Tastes like Dewar's but much more thick, almost like a honey texture. Way too sweet for me, with nothing else to offer. Not worth $40, I would maybe spend $30 on it, but at that point i might just save $5 and go for Dewar's whitelabel

It also have e150. You've been warned

i'm not sure if i can adequately describe it, but for me there's this unpleasant bite in the fumes as it's going down that kinda make me gag
Jim Beam is a borderline example here. sometimes i can take, sometimes i can't.
if it's too harsh i'll just mix it. soda water can be a good disguise, but some kind of cola, generally Coke is better at masking harsh flavors

>> No.11378286

>>11377833

What the other anon here >>11378044 said is pretty much it. There are pretty strong whiskeys but an overpowering alcohol fume flavor is unacceptable. Mostly for me, its a lack of balance, there are different profiles for whiskeys and they are all good, fruity, earthy, smokey, etc. Its all about subjective taste, but youre looking for something rich and balanced in whatever corner you chose. That can be very many combos. Woodsy/fruity, salty/smokey, sweet/earthy, whatever. Something smooth and balanced will always be welcome even if youre not in your particular comfort zone, you appreciate the thought and care thats clear from the experience. If i mix something for being too harsh, i often go with something that has lime or ginger, particularly with burbons. Most bad scotches i can just have with ice.

To each his own, I suppose. The Naked Grouse is great in my opinion, but it lacks the robustness of the whiskies I like the most. It's surprisingly smooth and sweet, wine gummy, maybe hints of cocoa and oak at the end. I googled and it says that it's a mix of Macallan and Highland Park, both of which are reputable whiskymakers. But as I said earlier, it's only about 30€ around here, which is pretty damn cheap when it comes to whiskies. So, even if you don't like it you won't have lost much. Atleast you'd learn whether you like sherried whiskies or not.

So, uh, sorry to show my obvious newfag-ness.
I just turned 21 about a month ago, and haven't really drank any thing yet, but I just bought some Jim Beam so I could cook some bourbon chicken tonight.
Naturally, I poured myself a little to try. While I obviously don't have anything to compare it to, I thought the flavor was quite pleasant, and very smooth, but wow the aftertaste was bad. It was very acrid and not very pleasant.
Is that just the alcohol, or does Jim Beam just taste like that?

Ah, ok. So like a Moscow Mule, or an Old Fashioned? Egg nog here in about a month?

The internet lead me to believe that Jim Beam was not a bad bourbon, just not a great one.
Doesn't matter too much, I'll just keep using it as a cooking bourbon.

I personally enjoy it and it's 4,5/5 in the Whiskey Exchange, with close to four hundred reviews. It's pretty damn good for the price and even "professionals" have reviewed it as a good whiskey.

When you taste for example Johnnie Walker's Red Label and Bowmore 12, you can really taste the difference. You notice the similar flavours (vanilla, flowers, dried fruit) but the first one is way too sweet, unbalanced and alcohol sticks out. Like fake Nike's, you know it's cheap

>> No.11396970

Bourbon is great but I'd say as a whole it's a lot sweeter than scotch. It's also an industry that is currently seeing growth so a lot of the "higher end" stuff is hit or miss and only has the price point because of availability. Try your basics: Four Roses, Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace and then move up from there if you want to get into it. Also if you're a huge scotch fan I suggest trying some ryes as they are both relatively harsh drinks.

I think this stuff is not necessarily bad, but overrated.
I've seen people use this stuff as a substitute for cointreau. I've tried doing it myself and it messes up the sugar/acidity/alcohol balance when using the standard recipes because it's much drier, without actually making the cocktail taste better.

No intensity of flavour
Alcohol as foremost flavour
Bitter / medicine aftertaste
Flavour disappears too quickly
Some people think a lack of complexity (too few distinct flavours) is bad. Too me it depends on those flavours. Wood + fruit/valilla = nice (Bulleit Bourbon, barrel aged Pinot Noir), Acidity + minerality (cheap tonic, Sauvignon Blanc) = bad.
And there's other things that are flat out individual preference / peeves. I hate sweet + viscous (honey whiskey).
