If its any consolation guys, I was reading uo about if its safe to eat city pigeons.
I mean squab is very prized dish, (yes, squab is not city pigeon in the strict sense) and despite the meat and cleanliness of city pigeons being arguably deplorable, they are a plentiful food source, and it's doubtful any city will raise mich of an eyebrow if word gets out about someone catching and slaughtering them for the dinner table.

But it makes you think. We westerners view city pigeons and their meat as probably diseased or bad quality meat, but it is in overly plentiful supply, so in the face of other paths being explored for future protein supplies in our diets (entemological or vat grown stem-cell beef) it looks like a more logical option.

And there are already established, delicious pigeon recipes so it wouldn't be all that hard to imagine.

I think it just looks more visceral as a dog because we're not used to seeing a dog....clean-shaven and grilled.
People also react the same when you force them to watch how traditional livestock is treated before and during slaughter. They wince and avert their eyes.

The point is it doesn't stop at dog. There's lamb, sheep, rabbit, fluffy chickens, deer, moose, elk and all sorts of other domesticated and half-domesticated herbivores we have turned into broiler livestock but are otherwise pleasant to look at and keep as pets (okay, not moose).
Yet these animals are routinely slaughtered and cut into appetizing consumer products.

Dogs, like cats, do seem the less likely slaughter candidate due to a number of historic cultural factors, a lot of which were already mentioned here, but it by no means will forever exclude them by some holy impenetrable rite from the dinner table for every person.

Cats present some real nuisance issues in some cities, and with too many of a pest animal, humans will treat said animals inhumanely.
You only need to visit such threads on /gif/ to knkw what I mean.

Better to humanely collect, slaughter, and consume than to keep them in pens sadly waiting endlessly for an adopter/new owner or until they get put to sleep.
