This is definitely wrong. There is a lot of strong arming going on in retail beer. The government really ought to deregulate the system, they created the whole mess

Oh I should add, another reason local stuff might not be well represented is the issue of a consistent supply. If you cant keep up with let's say, a grocery store demand, they dont want you. Empty shelf space looks bad on them and is potentially a missed sale. Even a major local brewery had supply issues for awhile here. The only reason it didnt cost them shelf space is because they're the second biggest brewery in the state.

Every state has this system. Many (mine included) have some limited exceptions for very small breweries but the overregulation on the alcohol industry is a problem we all deal with. Unfortunately alcohol distributors are old entrenched business with disproportionate political sway as old things tend to have. Hell even now some states like Maryland are moving in the wrong direction, we really need to get some libertarians in local government to end this corruption. There are no states where the craft brewers have the political clout to stand up to the lobbies for distribution or even retail.

In many parts the bar lobby is becoming the biggest opponent to craft brewers in the political backrooms (even though few will do anything in a publicly visible manner) because MIllenials like going to tap rooms so much more than shitty bars, and the dramatic increase in taprooms has put a lot of stress on the old politically empowered bar interests. This is the reason a lot of states ban taprooms from selling non-beer alcohol, and some even ban selling of beer brewed off site. Even worse many states require brewers to sell their beer to a distributor and then buy it back before selling at a taproom which is just fucking insane (see the recent Maryland stuff). Meanwhile these laws also have the effect of preventing people who own bars or restaurants from getting into the brewing business or collaborating with brewers, and sometimes are written so vaguely or confusingly that new brewers need to hire expensive lawyers before they even know if their business plan is technically illegal

Is 120 Minute still any good. It's probably been 4 years since I gave it a shot, but have since moved to California and it just seems crazy to spend $40 on a Dogfish head 4 pack when there are dozens of world class IPAs available literally at every bar and grocery store for cheaper. 120 minute honestly seems more like a gimmick these days with shit like Palate Wrecker easily available for half the price. I always liked DfH, but never thought they did anything really amazing.

That and 120 are probably the two I enjoyed the most, but they're both really overpriced and overrated. I'm not trying to shit on DfH. I had a fucking lobster chocolate beer (yes, it's exactly what it sounds like) that was pretty good, but even 120 at it's best was only ever just "pretty good". I hate calling anything on /ck/ a meme, but I feel like that's the best way to describe them. They do really weird shit and the brewer knows what he's doing, but nothing I've ever had from them has been stellar.

I had alcohol poisoning about 4 times because I'd drink a fuck ton. I would always pound 4 or 5 pints of Steelies in about 1 to 2 hours and drink a liter of vodka or whiskey right after then would drink a couple of twisted teas at the end of the night.

Decided to stop drinking after my fourth alcohol poisoning. Drink nothing but non-alcoholic beer now. A lot of them actually taste like beer. O'Douls tastes better than Keystone, Natty, Budweiser and Miller. It's not the best NA beer, but it's one of the more famous for a reason. Tastes like beer and I like to drink beer.

Very roughly, the higher the alcohol content the more you have to do to the drink to make it palatable, and doing stuff to beer costs money. More and better grain, more and better hops, etc. If you want to age it in barrels, that takes time, and time is money.
A 5% beer almost certainly has more plain water in it than a 9% beer. That doesn't determine which beer tastes better, but it definitely has an impact on cost.

Make it a point to try new beers, start reading about the different styles. Start with some of the staples and stuff that's fairly accessible then start branching out from there. As you work your way up, your palate will develop and you'll be able to tell the difference in quality between the different beers. It's a different journey for everyone, but for the most part nearly everyone started on shitty beer and worked their way up over the course of years.

Especially as you dip into heavier, darker, and maltier beers. Eventually you'll find yourself able to drink more without feeling bloated. You just have to become accustomed to the styles and to beer as a whole. It's perfectly normal when you start dabbling. Next thing you know, you'll be knocking down 14% barrel aged imperial stouts like it's nothing. Just give it time and have fun exploring what you like and don't like. And just because you don't like something right now, that doesn't mean you won't like it in a few months or years from now. Don't sweat it, just have fun. Third or fourth grade, based on where we were living and my dad's hours. The poor guy would get home mid-morning from an over-night shift, crack open a Ballantine ale (I know; I know.), get maybe two or three sips, then make the mistake of putting it down. At that point I'd swoop in and run off with it, glugging all the way.

I finally had a good barrel aged stout. I thought I just didn't like the style... the buttery bourbon note really works with a semi-sweet, high-ABV stout with some black malt to balance it out.

It's Rudy Van De Kelder's third week in the bottle, so I'm going to see how my monstrosity's doing. Last week it was still a little bit rough around the edges, but nowhere near as off-balance as I was expecting.

Once you get a decent set up that may run you about $300-400 (you can technically do this cheaper but quality really won't be there) a 5 gallon batch will cost you about $20+ depending on recipe. Compare that to a 24 pack of craft beer which is 2.5 gal. Its mostly for fun but you could feasibly make your investment back.
