by the looks of the scallop in the middle of the pic. OP must of used a ton of oil to " caramelize' them. theyr'e seared all the way on the sides. of the ones probably near the center of the pan.
out of all those scallops, only 4 look passable

scallops are my second favorite food next to crab legs. they are too pricey for me to eat regularly. that's why I say in my first post that I would still eat them. but I'm not picky. unless I'm paying for food at a restaurant.

serious question here: how do you know they're overcooked? They could be raw in the middle for all we know. There's no way of knowing without cutting one open and looking.

to guess the doneness based on the exterior appearance alone is kind of silly.

You can't. Watched a cooking show recently where some guy made scallops that looked pretty much just like that, and someone else tasted one and commented that they thought they were going to be overcooked but they were perfect.

In some other thread here somebody was saying they could tell a steak was overcooked by looking at the outside of it, which you can't. You might be able to tell when to flip it during cooking based on how cooked the edges are, but not the center doneness after the outside has been seared. Some people just like to talk shit either because they overestimate their own ability or because they want to put others down so they feel better about themselves.
