Why the fuck do people drink alcohol? I got some merlot for Christmas and it's the first time I've ever drank alcohol.
>Read online how to drink wine "correctly"
>Pour it into a correctly shaped glass and give it a few minutes to set
>Swirl and smell it (doesn't smell bad tbqh, can smell the grapes)
>Actually drink some and its better as fuck

What the fuck is the point of this stuff? It doesn't taste good. Is it literally "oh look it gets me drunk lol" is the only reason people drink this crap?

I used to drink alcohol because I thought it made me cool, making a gigantic fool of myself in attempt to drown out my sorrows. It was also a way of trying to fit in with the people around me. Glad I was able to grow out of that phase. Sobriety is great.

"Acquired taste" is a made up phrase invented by abusive Chinese parents who beat their kids into actually believing that they like the taste of shark penis and century eggs.

It's also what posers say when they're trying to fit in by claiming they "like" beer.

Nobody likes beer. You're just faking it like everybody else.

There are several options OP:
- wine should never be bitter, maybe you got a bottle of shit merlot (even if it was an expensive bottle it could have been stored wrong)
- you didn't serve it at the right temperature
- there are many different wines, maybe try a lighter and sweeter variety to get started
- you drink mostly soda and your tastebuds are accustomed to overly sweet beverages - sorry, drinks for grown ups are not for you

>Why the fuck do people drink alcohol?
Mostly a combination of tradition and not knowing any better. Alcohol was probably the first psychoactive compound known to man, and as a consequence there's been tons of cultural history centered around drinking alcohol as a socially acceptable mind altering experience. It's a bottom rung drug and there are many alternatives that are either far more pleasurable, far more interesting, or both, but most people either aren't aware of that fact or else don't bother pursuing non-alcohol drugs because of concerns about legal repercussions or not knowing how to get access to them.

They do make alcoholic drinks like that where you don't taste any alcohol and the actual flavor's genuinely like whatever it's being advertised as. Mike's hard lemonade and the different other flavors that brand offers are one example. Wine's usually not like that because wine snobs actually want it to taste like it's been fermented and not like it's grape juice.

In Japan, people who don't enjoy the taste of alcohol find umeshu tolerable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umeshu

Umeshu (梅酒) is a Japanese liqueur made by steeping ume fruits (while still unripe and green) in alcohol (焼酎 shōchū) and sugar. It has a sweet, sour taste, and an alcohol content of 10–15%. The taste and aroma of umeshu can appeal to even those people who normally dislike alcohol.

Pinot noir's what you're after. It's known as the red wine for people who don't like red wine and that movie Sideways even brings up repeatedly how Merlot in particular is bad and Pinot noir is the better choice. It's also known for tasting less alcohol-esque and more fruity. For high quality but a little expensive there's Beaux Frères. For affordable you can go with Broadley Vineyards Willamette Valley or something else around the $20-$30 range. Less than $20 and you start to risk buying something awful.

pro tip: it's not water so don't drink it as such, unless it's beer.
the more you sniff the alcohol the more intense it will be. scent enhances flavor.
when you take a sip, key word: sip, let it linger in your mouth for a moment , and open up your gullet and just let it fall down to your stomach. especially important for liquors.
start with "girly" wines, ones that are more sweet than dry and bitter (less tannin)

>> No.11724470

wine and other alcoholic drinks have quite a bit of variability in flavor. You can get flavors ranging from grapefruit to leather and everything in between in wine, and beer and spirits are wholly different worlds. Just keep drinking stuff until you find something you like, then keep exploring.

Almost all other normal ways of getting alcohol in your system involve more alcohol with less water, and most people don't like the feeling of dumping that much alcohol into their system that quickly. It's not because beer tastes great (especially when we're talking about someone drinking a 30 pack per day), it's because beer keeps it entering your system at a more comfortable rate.

I think part of it is just your tastes change with age and it is confused with "acquired" like when you are a kid you love super sugary sweet shit, but as an adult you start to like dry stuff and more bitter stuff. But also acquired taste is not necessarily just subjecting yourself to something till you like it. It is like drinking Mocha Fraps, to Mochas, to then liking Coffee with lots of sugar and creme, to then exclusively drinking black coffee, which before the path you hated. Or drinking lagers, then say pilsners, and maybe pale ales, until IPAs start tasting good and then your pallete is refined enough to enjoy a good stout. Kids dont just start forcing themselves to drink Imperial stouts at like 15 until they enjoy it 10 years later, it is more the refinement of your pallette.

And people who drink beer either drink it to get a buzz, or drink appropriate beers because they enjoy the taste, but most likely would rather a glass of wine.

V8 isn't tomato juice. It's vegetable mix juice.

Around 90% of the vegetable content in V8 is tomato, stop being an autistic pedant.

Try a different wine or try a different kind of alcohol. I need to try more wines but the 5~ times I've tried it I hated it. I'm alright with beer save that it makes me have to piss like a racehorse in a way that water never does. But spirits are great - there's no end of options including shit that is so sugary it makes soda look like plain water - Liqueurs. However I don't recommend those however as you could end up stuck on them and not want to venture outside of that. I can't really name a spirits which I feel is sharply bitter the way wine is. It's more of a burn and a strong overwhelming taste than a sharp bitterness. Personally I love brandy and cognac, but whiskey is good rum is good vodka is good I'm not big on tequila though.

Try different wines. I can't stand reds, or sweet wines. But dry whites go down like water. The more vinegary the better. I love it.

Tried Leffe and it's tasty, what other Belgian beers available to a European are good?
