I started eating these. For anyone interested, most fake meat is pea protein, soy protein or wheat gluten. There is also quorn which is a fungus but I haven't investigate that as much. Pea protein is low in methionine though not that low, it's PDCAAS is still 0.72 compared with 0.92 for beef and >1.0 for egg white and whey, though the score is capped at 1.0). You can make up for the methionine with brown rice protein though this is a bad tasting protein and seems to be high in oxalates. Soy is more complete but there are concerns about phytoestrogens.

Given the above, pea protein seams like a good option. Beyond Burger uses pea protein. There are pea protein based burgers with better macros (more protein) but beyond burger is much better tasting.

For myself, I'm not trying to be vegan, just minimizing animal products as much as I can, trying to balance health and fitness with ethics. So I'm eating a lot of Beyond Burger but also eating small amounts of meat, milk, eggs and fish.

Sight is much more important, it isnt even close. My wife watches cooking shows, one of them often starts off by blindfolding the contestants and asking them to identify various ingredients. Not exotic stuff mind you, but basic things like mayonnaise, sour cream, celery, bell pepper, anchovy, worcestershire sauce, etc. Very few contestants can get more than one right and they are frequently head-scratchingly wrong, smell and taste are important for the overall effect, but are extremely low resolution unless your name is fido. There is a reason that good restaurants put such an emphasis on presentation.
After the infamous Brochet study came out, my wine club put on a variant of the experiment. We took four California wines (two white and two red) that we had tasted in the past year. We blindfolded each other and tried to identify which was the red and which was the white. Not the varietal mind you, just red or white. The results were slightly better than random, but only slightly.
We were a lot less fussy over pairing wine with food after that, the red-wine-with-everything crowd took a lot less shit, though there was still unanimous agreement that champagne is shit with most chinese and indian dishes.

Dry aged beef is a niche meme that makes up a tiny proportion of the meat that people eat, so it's not a valid point but even so, you'd have to be dumb to call it "decomposition".

Decomposition is caused by bacteria and fungi. In dry-aging conditions, bacteria and fungi are unable to thrive and cause any decomposition of the meat due to the fact that such conditions involve freezing temperatures and lack of moisture - warmth and moisture are the two very things that cause bacteria and fungi to thrive and subsequently cause meat decomposition.

you cannot get sufficient quantities of the essential amino acids from vegetables unless you eat them in far larger quantities than humans are physically capable of. one problem is that plants that supply one or two essential amino acids contain another chemical that inhibits absorption of some essential vitamin, so you have to eat something else to compensate for that, and the web of interlocking effects simply become unsolvable even for experienced vegans and the health problems can only be "solved" by declaring them a "feature" of veganism. unlike herbivores, there are too many things we can no longer synthesize, because we've evolved to get them by eating animals that can. I don't know why vegans are such evolution denialists, but vegans believe a lot of stupid shit so...

that's what he's saying. there is a asterisk reference in each column title, and an asterisked footnote at the bottom of each column. the note in the green column says "* 4-oz beyond burger retail patty" which clearly only refers to the beyond burger not the hambuger. the footnote in the red column says "USDA National Nutrient Database *" which could theoretically refer to both I suppose. using asterisks for both footnotes is misleading since you would most likely read the 4-oz note - since it has the asterisk in front where it's obvious - and miss the word "beyond" in it. the USDA footnote has the asterisk at the end, which is nice and symmetrical but also incredibly misleading because at first glance you assume it's the souce of the graph, not the footnote. this sort of sleight of hand is almost certainly deliberate.

which patty is that referring to? the vegan or the beef?

1) center patty has label "1/4 lb patty"
it seems obvious that this means both sides,
BUT the beyond burger on that same side is described as "burger patties", the beef side never uses the word "patty" or "patties". this gives the a a legal weasel way out if somebody proves they're lying, because this weight only applies to the "patties" which the graphic only uses for the beyond burger. there's no obvious reason they didn't use "beef patty" on the beef side, and the omission is conspicuous.
2) the dual asterisk footnotes. the left footnote is the obvious asterisk footnote, but it explicitly states the vegan patty (that word again) is 4oz. it conspicuously fails to state that this weight applies to both. the gray text is hard to read, discouraging anyone from paying too much attention to this, and its easy to assume that this is the footnote for both asterisks because the note on the other side has the asterisk in a very nonstandard place - the end of the note, made even harder to notice by the same difficult-to-read light grey text.

I'm saying that the 1/4 lb and 4oz text can be defended successfully in a court of law as applying *only* to the beyond burger not to the beef burger, while convincingly *implying* that it refers to both. I have described in detail the various gymnastics the graphic goes through to accomplish this.

>they most likely have several varieties of patties.
this infographic comes from their website, on the beyond burger product page. they only list the one size of patty.
this implies a few things that are relevant:
1) this isn't just some quick hacked-up graphic posted to stir up shit on a madagascar water polo forum. there was a budget and thought given to this, and it was looked over by many many people. any "mistakes" are almost certainly deliberate.
2) this infographic is legally advertising, so they must be able to defend against false advertising charges. this graph is carefully constructed to avoid legal liability for misstatements about the relative merits of beef burgers.

Is it retarded if I just don't eat store bought meat? I fish and hunt my own game, but something about factory farming seems intrinsically horrific. I understand that animals die to sustain other animals, and that despite all the prettiness of society life is a struggle to survive. By sustaining yourself you compete against other creatures to live. Even the life of a vegan is sustained by murder and denying resources to other creatures. That's just how life is. But something about setting up an entire system where animals are confined and mutilated until they die only to be packaged and bought by people with no understanding of the sacrifice made or connection to the natural world seems unsettling to me. Maybe I'm delusional.
