For me, it's unsalted for cooking (learned that one the hard way!) and kept in the fridge. Salted for spreading, kept on the counter.

Buttered rice is because of Africans. In rice growing regions of Western Africa ideally the rice does not stick and each individual grain of rice moves freely.

I hated rice growing up because my family would mix it with margarine or salted butter and it to this day tastes like trash to me.
