When is it worth buying the premium brand of something?

Pic related I may get shit on for buying $6 bread and $5 peanut butter but actually when you look at calories per dollar it’s still overall quite cheap.

I get a delicious breakfast everyday for 9 days for just $11. (More like $13 since I also add butter and cinnamon)

And the top shelf brands taste significantly better than wonder bread and jiffy bullshit.

If it has less chemicals and processed trash then pay more

I've never been picky about peanut butter, I'll eat up any brand of it. As for premium packaged bread, well, that's kind of a weird place between cheap sandwich bread and just baking your own. I always get the cheapest whole wheat bread and I'm happy with that.

>> No.12443352

Peanut butter is definitely worth it. I grew up eating the jif crap. The last couple years I've been eating real peanut and really like it. Tried Jif recently because I didn't have any good peanut butter and it was abysmal.
I'll admit it was easier to put on a banana at least.

But with bread specifically, there's no excuse to buy a $6 loaf when you have at least 100 choices in your local supermarket. Thatextra $3 premium is merely going to a few nuts and seeds that you could just buy wholesale, or god forbid encourage you to bake your own loaf.

Well yea I agree but also Dave’s bread is still 360 cal/$ so I don’t mind paying a premium. When so many other foods I buy have a way lower cal/$ ratio.

Same with like rice, why would you buy generic when even the top brands still have over a 1000 cal/$ ratio.

OLIVE OIL - most Americans can't identify the taste of rancid/knockoff olive oil, and it's a revelation once you get some decent stuff. If you want to be 100% sure you're good to go, grab some olive oil from California that has the Sensory Panel Certification on it and has a press date within the last year.

Companies don't take calories into account when they decide what price they should slap on their products. If they did, bags of rice would cost a fortune while truffles would be a dime a dozen. I have read the study, since I *do* read studies, and I know where to read this study, which is incredibly easy if you *do* read studies, indicating that you don't read studies

I really think you've failed to grasp the point. For really cheap foods like rice, the difference in quality rises very rapidly if you spend an extra five bucks. Contrast that with more expensive items like meat, where an extra 5 bucks isn't going to raise the quality by a whole lot. You'd need to spend a lot more to achieve the same effect

Or think of it this way. You could buy better rice, peanut butter, and bread or you could buy the shitty version of those products and spend your money on better beef. So in terms of what you're going to have in your house, spending more money on high calorie/$ foods you will be able to upgrade more items
