That's exactly my point. Many cities have a distinctive food culture. Ignoring that to chase after the junk food dishes from a century ago is setting yourself up for disappointment. It'd be like going to Philly and getting a cheesesteak with wiz at Pat's and then wondering why Philly sucks. Or going to SF and getting a Mission burrito, or pastrami at Katz's in NYC. Lining up for hot dogs at Pink's in LA or seeking out migas in Austin. Fried ravioli in St Louis or a Skyline three way in Cincinnati. All are iconic dishes from another time. They're still there and you can still try them. But they represent the food culture of these places back in your grandparents' day. May as well just eat a can of Wolff chili. Times have changed, and all of these places have better food options now. Even Cincinnati. Trying these iconic dishes for novelty's sake as a tourist is kind of fun, but assuming they represent the food culture of these places in any meaningful way today is wrong. Time has moved on, and expecting the foods that may have impressed your grandparents' contemporaries to be all that great by today's standards might be expecting too much. Judging a city's modern food culture based on such relics is also a mistake.

My boyfriend and I are going to Chicago for a few days and everyone keeps recommending the same goddamn places like Lou Malnatis, Gino's East, etc. Are there other recommended places to go that aren't tourist traps? We definitely want to go to Chinatown.

I love a traditional Chicago dog. The top split bun, sprinkle of celery salt with tomatoes, removing that pickle, biting into the barely edible tough skinned sport pepper, and the dog itself is a quality vienna beef of substance.

But, I adore Colombian dogs the most. I equally like Icelandic dogs with the crunchy fried onions and mayo, Jap-a-dogs, every kind of wurst, chargrilled dogs with bbq, mustard and raw onion dogs, corn dogs, grays papaya dog, chili dog with mustard and onion and cheese. At home I usually buy Hebrew National reduced fat, and they either get butterflied and pan fried, or else cooked on the gas grill. I top them with Howard's picalilli, mustard and some grilled onions.

Chicago makes a lot of good sausages and therefore good hotdogs. That being said, hotdog carts and the more tourist-centric chains will pile veggie slop a mile high to give you "more" for your dollar. Green relish is gross imo. I'm more down for hot peppers, onions, and brown mustard.

Chicago Italian beef is the same deal. Find a good place. My go-to (not the best, but I'm a creature of habit) is Nick's near O'Hare. Their gyros are fantastic as well.

There are two camps of Chicago-style pizza. One is amazing, the other is crap. The crappy one is the wet, cheese-heavy slopfest that you'll get at the tourist sites like Lou Malnati's and Giordano's. It's garbage. The other uses a risen dough and carmelizes cheese to form a retaining crust in the pan. The two in this camp and Burt's vs Pequod's, which inspire their own rivalry, and I'm deeply team Pequod's. There's two locations, one on Clybourn, and the other in Morton Grove north of the city, which is the original.

All of these "Chicago" foods have the same caveat that every other regional food has. They have been adopted as tourist attractions, and as such have been reduced to a minimum viable product by some company, but the good locations still exist.

I live in a rural Hoosier town north of the Wabash. The population here is a mix of Dutch, German, and French. Plenty of cheap Old World foods like boudin, sauerkraut, and ox tail soup. Not to mention New World stuffs like cornbread, plank cooked catfish, or pan fried tomatoes. If you have the time, I'd suggest a visit with an open mind. It may not be the latest greatest in food trends, but that suits me just fine. If you ever want a good example of the area come on over, friend.

I've spent enough time there to know the people there who hunt, fish, make cheese, brew beer and either have their own little farms or shop at farmers' markets and cook their own food are doing fine. But they're a real minority. Most folks shop at the supermarket and eat out at chain restaurants. They're eating garbage like breakfast pizza, Chex mix and Culver's. They create minor traffic jams around Olive Garden parking lots on weekend evenings. They think Toppers is good pizza and dunking it in ranch is "normal". If you visit and don't know someone who cooks and is plugged into the local food scene you're totally fucked for finding something good to eat. I am from Chicagoland and I don't see it as a food city. There's really good versions of burgers and hotdogs (remove the pickle spear because having both pickles and relish is dumb imo) and deep dish is ok, theres great mexican and thai food but I don't think Chicago has a real independant food culture all its own. Shedd and science and industry are overrated imo unless you have kids with you. Planetarium is more niche but isnt as expensive as the rest. The art museum is good too for the ancient art but I hate the modern art parts, but they have a big classical section.

For other general touristy shit Michigan ave and state St have big shopping areas but the traffic and homeless aren't worth it. Oldtown is really nice.
