Mate will pretty much always taste like shit unless you mix it with something else. I think it's tolerable when it's cold enough, but the main draw for me is that the caffeine rush is waaay nicer than coffee. It's longer-lasting and smoother than coffee and it doesn't give me the gnarly afternoon crash / headaches that I get with coffee.

Kava seems kinda iffy because it's not really regulated and you can get liver damage if the plant is infected with mold (which is entirely possible considering there's not much incentive for a shady company to ensure their product is clean). Not him, but you're trying to call coffee a drug which is different from saying caffeine is a psychoactive substance.
I don't know of anyone for example who considers theobromine containing chocolate a drug unless they're calling it that as a joke about how much they like it. Or anyone who calls cheese a drug just because it contains tyramine.

Decaf is always sitting there next to the regular coffee machine, often noticeable through the use of orange coloring on the top. Nobody sets up non-alcoholic beer taps next to regular beer taps.

You're being ridiculous. Accidental decaf is a super-common cliché. Look it up, it happens all the time. Non-alcoholic beer is not like that at all, nowhere close. Like i've been telling you, decaf is genuinely everywhere regular coffee is, non-alcoholic beer is only around in one small little section of supermarkets, if available at all. It's as expected you also serve decaf if you're serving coffee as it is expected you'll offer cream and sugar.
