No, a food desert is where there are no grocery stores and if you are lucky the closest thing you have to a grocery store is a convenience store so you don't have access to fresh fruits/vegetables and non-deli meat. They are found in rural areas and the inner city.

That makes no fucking sense. Everywhere has grocery stores. If there's a McDonalds in your town, there's a grocery store.

I watched a documentary on food deserts, specifically complaining about the influx of dollar stores.

I personally don't see a problem with them. They said oh I don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables so I'm fat and diseased, but the dollar stores has canned vegetables, sometimes frozen as well, and a variety of things to eat that would help maintain a balanced diet.

The main thing I would say the dollar store doesn't have is fresh meat.

The only places that it actually sort of applies to correctly are inner city shitholes where there's nothing but 7/11s and fast food joints for miles because no grocery stores can stay open since they run on extremely tight margins and can't afford the security they need in those areas, and dying suburbs on the outskirts of cities that used to have one but it closed because everyone is moving away.

>>13129613
Frozen stuff is 95% as good for you as fresh, and basically just as tasty if you use it for cooking. Canned is normally pretty bland, but modern flash frozen veggies are almost good enough to be worth eating raw after you thaw them.

More pertinently, farmers markets are highly seasonal and for most of the country simply cannot exist year round.

Beyond the talk the proclivities of certain urban folk, high density urban areas don't work with the concept of a supermarket at all. Square footage is simply too valuable for the large amount of space, particularly the empty space, required for a traditional supermarket. Places like Dollar General are making massive inroads because of the economic issues with large stores, to the point that advocates are having to redefine "food desert" in terms of purely non-canned, non-frozen foods because their old definitions no longer apply. And given Dollar General's push into expanded grocery options and fresh produce, in 10 years "food desert" is probably going to have a twisted, labyrinthine definition.

Well you're thinking of it in hillbilly terms. In your mind you're thinking "what aspects of the country are in the city" which is very few. Just like the answer of "what aspects of the city are in the rural country" which is also very few.

When I lived in a rural area it's very free but very boring. I would ride my dirtbike up a trail and go shooting a bit. My uncle had a ranch we would go drink at and watch him fall of his horse that he'd been training dressage. Shooting bows, fishing less than 10 min away depending what you're trying to catch. All great, but gets boring after 10 years and you end up in a rut.

When I lived in the city life was essentially a paradise but you're trapped. Got invited to fancy dinners, met a lot of very intelligent people at the top of their trade. Get to play with HUGE numbers at work (I designed industrial equipment). After work my friends and I would go to theme parks or go mountain biking on the trails down to the beach. And to top it off, incredibly hot girls are just looking for that sugar daddy so you get to fuck chicks you normally would never have a chance with. But in the end you're stuck essentially as a domesticated animal.

It's too different animals. And I should also add this is all just in California. humboldt to Orange County.

Food deserts don’t exist anyway. It came about because one local politician tried to force supermarkets into staying in her district where they're losing money because it was an election year, she’d been doing a shitty job, and her being black wasn’t an election winner anymore.

The classic “food desert” in the argument was always Detroit. But then it was revealed that either nobody actually lives in the places where there are no supermarkets, or there are multiple grocery stores between the neighborhoods where poor people live and the places where they actually work, so they’re not inconvenient. It’s a complete nonissue.
