Hey Anons, I need some help...

I posted this in the old thread, but it looks like it got pruned or something.

I’m looking for a good tea for beginners, something relatively healthy and somewhat easy to make.

The most common types I’ve heard of so far are green tea and matcha. Would it be a good idea to start there?

Thanks a lot!

European tea culture tends to be either UK/India style (with milk, possibly spices), or "samovar belt" style (strong concentrate diluted down, with hard candy or jams or something). Tea "straight up", like chinamen and jappoes do, is relatively recent.

Also, why is OP's tea pet so enormous. Is the pot extra tiny? Couldn't be.

anybody ever tried tea with distilled water and what do you think about it ? It tastes different but not worse to me and I really like how transparent it looks in a glass

>>13317403

Matcha is a pain in the ass to do right and the quality is all over the place -- and unless you get the stuff super fresh(which is expensive) and have the means to keep it sealed it tends to lose its quality extremely quickly when exposed to air. I was fortunate enough to partake in a matcha ceremony once and I have never been able to approach anything like it when trying to do matcha myself.

As for a "beginners" tea, just read the descriptions of teas and get something in your price range that sounds interesting. The above sticky and /r/tea has a lot of noob-friendly guides.

>>13317414

It's pretty big for a tea-pet, the pot is standard gongfu size as far as I know.

Hello anon, what you heard is partially correct, because you can find some good tea for beginners in every variety. However some types of tea are more expensive (oolongs or white tea).

Starting with matcha and green tea is fine, especially because you can easily compare the two and find out which is your favorite. If you want to try some black tea, try to get your hands on some Ceylan stuff.
Do not hesitate to try flavored tea, depending on what your tastes are !

Have good day out there.

I find that the more caffeine I drink, the worse the withdrawal is. I was up to 4 cups of coffee a day one time and quit cold turkey. I spent my Saturday in bed with advil and a cold compress. Similarly, went on vacation to visit a friend and they don't drink coffee, so I just didn't drink any (usually had 1-2 cups a day at that time). Had a strong headache, light sensitivity, dizziness, and hot flashes for like half a day before I got better. Idk why my body is such a bitch about it. It could also be just my imagination that it's happening, idk lol.

Nowadays I stay away from coffee except for decaf (I like the taste still). I don't bother with the caffeine content in tea as it's typically lower than that of coffee, and even if I skip a few days I don't usually get bad withdrawal. I just try to be mindful not to drink too much of it at once. Or I go for tisane/herbal instead. I could just chug mint tea or barley tea forever

Nope. Start everywhere -- everywhere except matcha, that is. Tea is very literally just a "pour water and wait a bit" kinda deal. Children can and do do it.
Go to yunnansourcing and buy 25-50g of each type (black, green, oolong, white) of tea they have. Buy a gaiwan for a fiver online and look up how to use one (it'll take fifteen minutes to figure out). Try each of them and figure out what you like and what you don't, then branch out of the types you do like.

Just don't make matcha right now, and don't imagine that tea is somehow medicinal. And drop the namefaggotry.

Anywhere you go as a guest, ,,coffee or tea" is a standard question once you sit down, and I'd argue tea is more popular, if only because some peope don't have a coffee express to offer coffee while teas requires only a mug and hot water.

A kettle is a standard piece of equipment here, I haven't seen samovars at all, but I'm a city guy and don't have family in the east, where it may still be popular.

The 'green' study was simply the first true clinical study of health benefits of tea, but it was a study limited to green. What green has going for it, so do the other teas, it would have just been wrong to report something other than green tea does x when in the media talking about the results of the _first_ major study. Experts believe white tea is at the same level of healthiness, no more or no less, and quite possibly black has even more antioxidants than green. So, enjoy whatever tea you actually like, kiddo. Or pay attention to caffeine intake and keep it down to 5 or less per day instead. Variety in foods that you eat isn't a bad idea, in general.

Yorkshire is a processed product using the CTC(crush-year-curl) method which produces a tea with homogenous “bold” flavor at the expense of bitterness and the corresponding requirement by many to add milk and sugar to make it tolerable to drink.

If you are interested in teas that have a unique distinguishable taste as well as much less bitterness then I would recommend you look into purchasing tea that isn’t a “blend” of Indian teas, CTC produced, or Fannings/dust teabags, but rather a whole leaf tea.

The guys from tea db seem to like their product. I also appreciate the way they list some of their products, their most expensive cake from this year says you should not buy it because it is too expensive and recommends one of their other cakes instead. I would say their mark-up is pretty similar to Yunnan sourcing and nowhere near some of the more egregious mark-ups you see from some of the more boutique western vendors. Imperial Yunnan Dong ting bi Luo Chun white leaf

Dry leaf looks beautiful, deep green fading into a green hued silver, neatly curled around eachother in clumps. feels softer than the other teas I've drank, sorta silky

Dry leaves smell faintly of tea, if I take a deeper breath I can barely smell some kind of fruit or vegetable scent? Can't place it

1st brew, 4g (close to 5) for 20seconds, 100mls of water at 85c.

Wet leaves smells of dry wet grass, roasted vegtable (wanna say root in particular), vaguely honey at the tail end when you take a deep inhale of it. Smells acidic on the surface
The silver has been consumed by the green hues

Liqour is faintly colored, carries a different scent than the leaves, kind of neutral with some spice smells to it

Wow, taste is unlike anything I've had in tea before, really light but also very noticeable. Kind of hard to place the flavor, not sure I've tasted enough things to properly name what taste this is like.
The mouth feel is very silken, and it sticks to your tongue and coats the back of you throat.

Despite not being able to pin point the exact taste (its really nice and comforting, but I just can't put my finger on what it is, just that the taste reminds me more of smells than actual tastes if that makes sense, fainter than my other tea, but incredibly enjoyable still)

Will post on the other brews if it changes enough or I figure out what its soft flavor IS exactly.
Still, this sampler has made me want to get some white tea my next order

Instantly has more power, still silky, the vegetable flavors more prominent, but it flows into a soft finish. Wanna say it tastes like green beans or similar mild tasting sprout cooked in butter. deeper sips are slightly astringent, which is throwing off my inspection, while smaller ones are more creamy/ buttery taste and texture forward, and I am finding it hard to figure out the middle ground.

Still has everything good from the first brew, still subtle, especially compared to my usual drinks

Also the resulting brew for both of these has been pretty frothy/bubbly and it remains as such in the 3rd brewing (40s)

Wet leaves have lost their acidic scen, smell more like grilled/ roasted wheat now.
Taste has changed, more forwardly astringent// grassy, sticks and feels like it dries the tongue. The after taste mellows and clings there. Still as silk smooth as it has been, getting those buttery and sprout flavors under it, mostly the buttery tastes. And the astringency/ grass taste has faded as I've worked my way into the cup.

Still really liking this

4th brew
50s

Astringent/ grass tastes gone, very creamy/ buttery now, still smooth as the last 3 brewings, the bean/ sprout flavor is subdued now. Think I'm getting some of the roasted grain I smelled on the leaves but that could just be me imagining things.

Different from the other brewings, the tastes are more melded

they're faint, and under that creamy or buttery taste I've been getting. its a kind of light tea, certainly less "Pow" than black or even the few green teas I've had.

in fact I'd only say the 3rd brew was vegetal (to my tongue at least). the rest of it have been more like a soft green (from my short experience with good tea at least).

Really its more the texture/ feel of the liquor than the taste which makes this tea enjoyable, though it also tastes nice, but it is an incredibly smooth and clingy brew.

And again, you might taste it entirely different than I find it, my mother thinks every tea I let her sample tastes of earl grey, and i have no idea how or why. And this is my first white tea outside of tea bags, so I can't really be certain in my inspection/ study of it

Yunnan "Purple beauty" green tea from Lancang

Dry leaves. Very, very dark for a green. But shaped like green tea leaves still, with several "unfurled" leaves among the bunched up/ twisted dry leaves you usually get. visible molted colors, like green struggling to get out from under the dark shade.
THE dry leaves are Very fragrant, doesn't smell quite like any green tea I've had before.

And the store page on yunnan does say this is a purple tea, so this is my first of that kind, and the first "purple" green I've tried. Certainly doesn't look like an ordinary green, nor smell like them.

wanna say the wet leaves smell more "Woody" or "meaty" to my nose than other greens I've had, getting floral notes as well as the usual acidity I get with greens and whites, but much more mellow than with them. Kinda smells like stewed/roasted tomatoes? and wet burnt wood?
least that's what I'm smelling.

Liquor seems darker than I was expecting, hard to pick out colors in my little clay cup, may be ever slightly purplish?

Smooth, sweet. Great green tea. Mild vegtable flavors, taste more like sweat beans or peas. Oh man this is fucking amazing, like its texture isn't Smooth smooth, it has something different about it, I don't want to say thicker or more syrupy, its...different, has a more cloying feel to it.

Very luxurious. Might be the best tea I've had so far godfucking damn.

Honestly muttering "fuck" after every sip its so tasty and good, and not at all like other greens I've had before. its Mysterious and I should've order more than 100g cause I'm going to burn through this.

getting some roasty notes, no astringent or pine flavors.

the leaves look weird, still dark, and I can make out the green patches on the leaves, one or two has become a VERY deep shade of green

Leaves are now clearly a dark as fuck green, sort of like leaf or grass in the shade or sea weed. Much more roasted/ woody smells on the wet leaf, gonna post a pic of after this post. they're beautiful

still tasty and sweet, mouth feel has changed a bit, still mostly the same. most of the flavor is coming in late on each sip, but sticks around.

Refreshing and soothing, has a sparky feel on the tongue when I swallow. there's a slight char roasted taste under the rest of the flavors now, not smoked, not unpleasant or very noticeable

No bitterness or strong veg flavors, or any offensive or overtly present tastes at all. Still very mellow. I could drink this all day and night, would go great with something to eat.

tongue has a sort of soft cotton feel to it with this brew finished, after taste is very nice.

wet leaves smell nutty now, more than roasted, like cooked cashews, walnuts or pines, one of those real hardy nuts. maybe even Cacao

mouth became slightly "Chalky" after being "cottony" between the last brew and this one.

The leaf smell may be tricking me, but I think I'm getting some nuttiness in this brew. liquor seems ever so slightly lighter to the tongue, but the spark feeling comes quicker. And yep can definitely taste some kind of nut in it now, really noticeable after a few sips and pondering on it

Still very mellow, already a lil tea drunk

I would like to start this post by stating that I am English.
Does anybody else get the impression that a LOT of people who drink tea online are just Americans who think they're super sophisticated and "British" for switching from shitty coffee to a shitty builder's brew? The kind of cat mums ("moms") and hipsters who think they're connoisseurs for buying a blend of butterfly farts and shitty Bong tea? They don't seem to understand that there is absolutely nothing charming or cutesy about drinking English breakfast. English breakfast, assam, ceylon, earl grey, these are all the "filter coffee" of the United Kingdom.
"Ah yes, I purchased a London Fog (tm), I just adore the fragrance, and what about you? I heard you bought a Black Current (tm)? Do tell"
And what really gets my goat is they don't even know how to act British. They buy Lipton. They put cream in their damn tea. They're usually dimly aware that PG Tips isn't exactly for the top hat wearing classes so they get some shitty tea blended with pomegranates and butterfly farts made in America instead.

Cold brew for 8-16 hours in the fridge is another option that might work.
You can also try this if you have a wok

Can any Bay Area People tell me if aroma tea shop is a good place to get tea? Is there bulk jasmine tea basically the same as sunflower jasmine tea? Is there a better place to go?

The thing is, if you’re drinking tea throughout the day 550ml isn’t gonna cut it. Having a gallon of cold brew tea in the fridge that I might end up not entirely using is preferable to running out.

But that’s just me and I literally just started this two days ago.

You can easily tell the difference between a guinness and a stout triple its price even as the first beers you ever taste.
