Once again there is sushi thread on /ck/ and once again I feel that urge. That urge that has coarsed through my blood and the blood of my ancestors long passed. Above all other rolls, the King of rolls. The Godzilla Roll.
Perhaps you thought sushi could only have wonderful flavor and texture. That the beginning and the end of this journey through culture could only ever be context-less but you where wrong. The Godzilla roll shows the world what amazing food is. It is not only a filling meal, made with the best of ingredients and most dedicated of cooking styles. It is a story.

The story of the Godzilla roll is at first glance a simple one. A mere reference to the famous film franchise you think? Ah but how wrong you are, for the story this impressive and domineering sushi roll tells is one of power, of loss, and domination. For the story this roll tells to make sense we need context. I am sure you have all heard of the major events of WW2. How in an effort to end the conflict as soon as possible the American nation of the United states used its greatest weapon against the Japanese. In fact it had to use this weapon twice, and on civilian cities no less. The impact of this devastating attack ended the war much earlier then anticipated and left a cultural blow on the Japanese people deeper then any but them could understand. The following decades being shaped by that event and its implications.

With this in mind the story of Godzilla, the king of monsters is easy to understand. A film about the destructive power of nature and of the weapons we now wield as a species. All framed in front of the loss the Japanese suffered. So now, what of the sushi roll named after these events?

What we have here gentleman, is a sushi roll, the iconic Japanese dish (city), deep fried (destroyed) and sold to hungry Americans (innocent) in exchange for US dollars (irony). If this is not the height of poetic storytelling in cooking, im not sure what is.

I live in Japan and people here genuinely think that corn on pizza is delicious and some sort of hidden italian delicacy. People here are really fucking nuts about italian food but can never remotely cook anything like it. There are loads upon loads of "italian" restaurants here but when you go in it's always some weird fucking japanese ripoff where they fuck up all of the dishes by adding jap shit like raw squid and eel and shit to it and then they try to fucking play it off as "real italian food". It doesn't help that people here don't know what normal bread or cheese is. It's all fucking gross. I have not had any normal-tasting cheese in all the time I've lived here, and good bread is about as rare as a properly paid salaryman. These people are born on this island, they will live their whole lives on this island, and they will die on this island without ever tasting real bread or cheese in their life and that's just sort of sad. The worst part is that because no japanese person actually knows what real italian food is like, nobody can call restaurants out on this bullshit, everyone eats it all up and calls it "honto ni umaiiiii uwuwu" and everyone thinks this is what real italian food is like. It's just sad. "OOhh rettsu addu fishu eggu andu seaweedu to pasta carbonara don't u kno this is how rearu itarian peeporu eat!". The worst part for me is that japan doesn't just massacre classic italian food like this, but they also do it with every other country's cuisine imaginable. French, spanish, mexican, turkish, you name it. They botch everything they come across as "wow foreign so cool" but it's never apparently fucking good enough unless they douse it in soy sauce and raw octopus to make it "authentic european" food. Don't get me wrong I love me some japanese food but fuck this country for ruining foreign food culture and fuck the people for being too retarded to not know what real food is like, even though they kind of can't help it, fuck em it's gross

Lower income, duh. Americans can pay more so restaurants charge more. If you go to a third world country it seems like everything is extremely cheap but that's because you're thinking in dollars.

But food is also extremely cheap in the US. You can buy a gallon of milk for a dollar in some places, ffs.
