Not the best thread to ask, but I don't want to make a whole new thread for it: Anyone got a good sake reccomendation? My favorite is probably Dassai 50, and also Dassai Sparkling. I also really like yuzu sake's but I'm open to try something new or similar to D50.

To stay on topic, I have a half-finished bottle of Nikka Coffey Malt Whiskey OP. It was a gift, it's quite good, IMO. But I still think Taketsuru is my favorite Japanese whiskey. Might have some later tonight, but I want to save it for a special occasion.

Drinking straight gin isnt particularly pleasant. Ive never known anyone to enjoy it. In my experience, anything above mid-tier gin is just pointless since its getting mixed anyway.

Closest you might come to tasting it neat (and still finding it enjoyable) is in a martini, but im not sure thats a drink youd make for home drinking.

Gin is all over the place man. There is no relationship between price and quality, and even stuff you'd expect to increase quality like abv and age don't mean a lot. Also I suspect there's huge regional biases for local botanical.
I recommend Giniversity if you can get it.

>>13568695
Like whisky good gin should be sipped. Mixing it with a very neutral tonic doesn't ruin it however. You can absolutely pay $80 and end up with a mix only gin though, which makes the misconception understandable.

Which of those did you try?
Glenfiddich, and its immediate competitors Glen Moray, Glen Grant, Glenlivet all age fantastically well. Try to get ahold of some older ones. Glen Moray 15 being quite cheap if you're on a budget.
Glenmorangie is kind of timid imo, the cask finishes are where it is at. Do try the Quinta Ruben / Lassanta and try other sherry bombs if you like them.
Laphroaig has some serious competition. Try Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Talisker. Bowmore, Ledaig, Caol Ila are worse though imo.
Dalwhinnie 15 is great, but I've found the others to be timid.

If you wanted to pay a bit extra and stick with sherry cask, you could try Glendronach 18. Alternatively there are a lot of other (far cheaper) whiskies out there of all different styles which are just as good.

Interesting take. IMO Double Oaked is fantastic and it's got a bit of unique profile going on compared to most other bourbons. If you're gonna spend $50 on a bottle of bourbon, that's a good one I'd say.
I recently went through a bottle of regular Woodford and I found it extremely mediocre. There's several sub $30 bourbons I prefer based on flavor alone. Old Forester 100 is more complex, richer and cheaper to boot.

I hear a lot of raving about evan williams bottled in bond. Is it worth sipping? That is to say, it's worth drinking for the flavor, not just because it's easier to get down than other stuff in the price range because you're trying to get drunk on low calories.

I'm a total scotch snob and kinda think all bourbons are pretty similar except I do like bookers and stagg jr. I don't dislike stuff like blantons, woodford, or IW 15, but there isn't a huge difference to me that justifies the price of the bottles. Hence, if EW BiB has even a little bit of 'interesting' going on, I'll probably make it my go-to bourbon.

I don't expect a $17 bottle to keep up with a $60+ single malt, but

I've tried most of the Suntory and Nikka whiskys. Coffey Malt and Coffey Grain are both good but I think grain is better. Taketsuru is my favorite, even though it isn't the most expensive, there's just something about it that's just so good. Miyagikyo is great as well, superb really. Nikka from the barrel is good too, and I actually dislike the Toki, there was just something I didn't enjoy about it. Yoichi is really nice too. Nikkas Gin is also great.

Suntorys Hakushu is amazing too. Hibiki I haven't had in a long time but it was good, as good as Coffey Grain.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more descriptive but I haven't tasted most of them in a while. And I know /ck/ has a bit of hate for Japanese whiskys for whatever reason. I really suggest you search out the Taketsuru as I find it to be the best. But coffey grain is great and you'll be hard pressed to find any others with the shortages going on, or not finding them at high prices, but if you can get Hakushu do so as its great too.

I work for macallan in Scotland. Can confirm their pricing strategy is simply to be expensive for the sake of being expensive. Highland Park and Glenrothes literally owned by the same company, natural colour and sherry casked, and are almost infinitely cheaper (£3000 for a macallan 30 year old against 300 for a Glenrothes 30 year old). A reversion to being a lifestyle brand rather than a whisky brand, and they think they can somehow charge as much as a car for 700ml of whisky. It's a shame because the whisky is decent, even macallan gold, but you can't justify spending so much for a bottle of 12 year old liquid.

One of the rare times that I'm drinking a non-local beer(St. Louis fag) hell or high watermelon by 21st amendment brewery, good stuff.

Yamazaki is good but not worth more than 50. The fact that it's like 130 bucks now is just proof that collectorfags ruin everything niche

Who taught you backwards? nice tonic is for shit gin. You want flavourless tonic for nice gin if you have to mix it.

Don't judge all scotch based on Balvenie, one of the most boring scotches.
Try a smoky Islay and prepare to have your reality shaken.

I tried Weller Antique 107 the other day and it was excellent. Going to try some pappy van winkle 15 year next but only if I can get a shot for less than $50. I think I'm in luck though, cause theres a small bourbon bar near where I live that is known to usually carry it and has good enough relationships with big bourbon brands to get special bottlings.

I genuinely love seeing this shit in every whiskey/sky thread as much as seeing Redbreast. We're helping a family owned distillery that doesn't jew people on prices every time we meme this image

Seagram's 7, very, very unfortunately. If my work didn't stock it I'd be balls deep in a bottle of knob creek right now.

I love whiskey but cognac is turning into my go to.
I think the effects of being distilled from grapes makes it better. I love red wine for its effects and taste, and cognac gives me a similar but amplified effect. Very warm and comfortable buzz.
Whiskey is more stimulating. When I drink whiskey I always end up staying awake till sunrise.

Ive been getting more and more into wine, nothing more than like 25 bucks but i feel super cool drinking a bottle of merlot. Like i understand why women become wine and cat ladies. Anyway its good bc one bottle is enough to get me where i need to go, and itll last me a few episodes of the sopranos or game of thrones. Sons of anarchy requires something darker or beer though

I've been drinking red wine every night for months.
It's great. I found some good red wines that are under 10$. There's one South African vineyard that sells their bottles for 5$ and they're great.
Best 5-10$ red wines are Dark Horse and Ubikwa.
Around the 40-50$ range you should try The Prisoner.

Not currently drinking. When I do I just get a few 4 packs of the cheapest fucking beer I can find that isn't below 4%. If I'm feeling particularly frugal I'll opt for a £2 bottle of cider from Aldi.
