It’s not a feeling, it’s a fact. Animals don’t have morality, the only ones to execute or follow a moral code are humans. It doesn’t “apply” to us, we’re just the only ones to have such a thing. There is no reason outside of cultural or social practice to follow a moral code. We are good to other humans because they will be good to us back, because it helps signal our social value. To extend this practice to animals is what Wittgenstein would refer as a “linguistic confusion”. We get so caught up in trying to define and outline what morality is that we lose sight of what it was meant to achieve or signify to begin with. Morality was never meant to extend beyond being behavioral guidelines within a community. Those who were “immoral” were deemed to be of less value to society and therefore were punished or ostracized.
