Alcohol in France is much more focused on wine and strong liquors, beer isn't that much of a tradition here I think. That being said there are regional exceptions, with a lot of small breweries being created these past years with the trend on craft beer and things like that

Thanks guys, I figured the beer scene would be less robust than the beer belt. In the states we're lucky enough to get plenty of import beer so I'll try to dig up a few bottles. What style would you say is the quintessential beer spirit of France and Russia?

>> No.13886065

You should keep in mind that many german breweries use different recipes for export products. Especially pilseners tend to be a lot less bitter. Also the term lager doesn't exists in Germany so you can never be sure what exactly you're drinking there, because it could be pilsener, helles or export.

Glad to see that the brewery scene is picking up. In the US, we had damn near as many Germany before prohibition, then nearly everything went under of course. Is Russia building on past brewery tradition from before the Union, or are they really breaking new ground?

>> No.13886249

Not only for America but most other countries too. I don't know what they are exporting, but i would guess it's mostly pilsener or weizen. Weizen should be the same they sell in Germany. I also can't imagine that other unpopular types of beers (like bock, schwarzbier, dunkel etc.) are different from the original ones.

>Is Russia building on past brewery tradition from before the Union, or are they really breaking new ground?
we always had a good beer tradition since the Empire times, but these days we look towards two directions: mass market beer (chezh like pilsners, germany like laggers) and craft revolution, but it's already happened. and it goes also in two directions. first are fancy breweries with IPAs, APAa, fruit beers and shit like that, and second ones are just small local breweries who make ectraudinary quality laggers and pilsners for small local markets. and year after year those are popping up like after rain mushrooms.

honestly, there are non of those, most of our mass market beers are either euro laggers, or our versions of famous german / czech beers (not talking about Imperial Stout!). but when it comes to Russian craft beer, here we go. There are plenty of topest-tier beers of extraordinary quality. if you see, you buy it. sure US is an icebreaker in craft beer world, but we also have something to suggest.

Don't think it will be easy to find anything of note here in the states. though of course there are, I'm sure there are several decent major breweries in Russia, I don't think I'll ever get my hands on anything local. for example, the best American beer ever made is Red Oak Bavarian Amber Lager and I have never seen it outside of my state let alone in Europe. Last one isn't for "enjoying a beer" so much as those situations where you need something cheap, refreshing, and vaguely alcoholic but not really. Parties where everyone's drinking, or a drink while working on a car or in the yard. RR beats most other light beers imo.

For foreigns? I've always loved all the types of Guinness I've tried, and Sapporo and Modelo Negra aren't bad either. Although honestly, I've had worse experiences with most foreign beer than I have domestic (mostly cuz the foreign beer they sell around me is revolting shit like Beck's or Presidente).

My dad used to work at AB's St. Louis brewery (no "my dad's friend works at Nintendo" stories here, I'm being straight up, even if it's still anecdotal shit I can't confirm either) and he always told me that the big 40 oz malt liquor bottles were just to squeeze money out of black people who couldn't work out math. Reeeeally desperate or frugal alcoholics would go for bumwine, hard liquor, or just absurdly cheap/shitty normal beer. The breweries found out the best way to get the black drunk's dollar was to just make the bottle as big as possible and put them (without a dollar in advertising, the bottle size is its own selling point) in ghetto bottle shops around the country. Instant gratification or whatever, let them grab one bottle at a time and they'll keep coming back for more.

Yuengling is my go to common beer, cheap here and ubiquitous. I like the black and tan with a meal, gives lighter fare a little more backbone

>> No.13890632

>>13890603
It's been one of my favorites as long as I can remember drinking. I live in Mass now, and while distribution ramped up to New England, it's still a little sparse; pricier than it is back in Philly, and it can be hard to find brews that aren't the normal lager. Just glad to have it back, though.

On the bright side Sam Adams is cheapish up here, and it's always been a decent second for me.

I know a few norwegian mates of 25-35 age. locals, 100%. and even them say it's ridiculously expencive. so they have to go to Sweden to buy it. I find it's nothing to be proud of, Bjorn. and there are lots of european countries with craft beer production blowing up the sky with normal prices.

If you live in a country with social security, then alcohol should be taxed as the cost of drinking for society is quite big. Same goes for unhealthy food and smoking, but they're heavily taxed as well.

had this the other day, outside the ugly reddit homos on the bottle it was absolutely excellent, its now my favorite stout
has a very smooth aftertaste, tastes like a normal stout which shifts into a smooth bourbon taste, would buy again!
