Not sure about the British versions, but American baked beans are overwhelmingly sweet. I compensate by adding sweet/salty flavors to balance it out. A pretty often lunch for me is to crack open a can of baked beans and warm them up, but also to fry up a couple of sausages. Add them to the beans along with diced green onion, mustard powder, Tabasco, and a splash of worcestershire sauce. It's pretty bomb and really helps take the edge off the overwhelming sweetness.
