I just don't get the purpose of the middle bun. I order: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, mcdoubles, maybe even a quarter pounder. I get wanting the mac sauce. I don't get the third bun the ratio to meat and bread just doesn't seem right

It's to absorb the sauce. Basically hat middle bun gets disintegrated by all the sauce and moisture and becomes paper thin. I love it, even thought everyone else seems to hate it. Had a McDonalds just now because they've reopened delivery only.
Honestly, they should just stay that way, whilst McDonalds aren't great quality the food was alright. The warm food was still warm and the cold stuff was still nice and cold and I got served quicker by an uber driver than I would in the restaurant if I walked in normally.
