Due to somewhat complex organic chemistry stuff (cisfats vs transfats), transfats are significantly more common as a byproduct of vegetable oil production, notably margerine production, and they have been shown to increase low density cholesterol and reduce high density cholesterol, as well as quite a few other things that make it so you're more likely to get heart disease. It exists in nature, butter is like 3% transfats, but the levels in margerine are much higher.

No such thing as fat that stays on your body forever. Trans fats are bad because they raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol.

In any case they don't naturally occur in most foods except in trace amounts. But industrial processing has yielded some vegetable oils (those "partially hydrogenated" vegetable oils) that are high in them. There's nothing good about them.

Studying chemistry. Trans fats are fats where, in a chain of carbons broken up by a double bond, the molecule continues on the opposite side of the bond instead of on the same side. The nature of the bond means that trans fats are more likely to stay in your veins because those types of bonds, being lower energy, are solid at room temperature.

Basically fat usually melts unless it's trans, in which case it stays in your veins
