I don't eat any kind of sea bugs. Get over it.

It is proper etiquette for the host to ask if there are any foods the guests don't/can't eat.

If you've been asked and didn't say anything, you should eat whatever is given to you.

However, if the host didn't ask, you have the right to refuse.

I generally agree. My sister used to not eat pizza crusts and it would bug me out. That said, I used to hate chocolate as a kid, and even now I don't go out of my way to get it. I was pretty adventurous other than that, the only thing my parents stopped me from getting was cow brain tacos from this taco stand at a rest stop while we were on a road trip.
To this day I haven't had brain, but I'd like to try it.

I think pickiness is usually a disorder of some kind in most cases (for truly picky eaters, not a singular item like in your case), so I guess I shouldn't be annoyed by it.

I feel like hand waving being a bitch away as a disorder is how they became an adult that refuses a meal made out of crop staples. Their parents didn't make them eat the stuff they didn't immeadiatly like as a kid, and they grew up eating from a small list of bland shit they've been eating for their entire lives. I'm pretty on the spectrum, but I don't think I could see myself ever refusing a meal from a host or cohabitant unless they've demonstrated that they suck at cooking.

After all, when you ask what's in something after you try it, you're seeking explanation/confirmation of the opinion you're forming (good or bad).

Its one thing to not eat something because it looks nasty, think something like lobster. You wouldnt eat some random sea creature from the oceans depths that looked like it was involved in a nuclear bomb drop.

Then you have people who dont like the taste of something.

Im a picky eater but its mostly taste. The other day I had food with my brother in law at their home. He cooked and it tasted sweet as hell. I would rather eat something bland and unsalted than something sweet.

Insults notwithstanding, this is literally the logic of an autistic person.

If I wasn't getting some kind of personal satisfaction from cooking for guests and having them enjoy it, then I'd fucking order something and trade money for hassle.

The fact that you can't grasp this is why other social concepts like, "Insulting your host" are lost on you.

>not burden everyone with your insecurities

What this would mean in practice is that somebody with a peanut allergy would ask if a dish included "nuts" because of their awareness of the little label that warns of cross-contamination during nut production.

They'd still ask, "Does this have X in it?", not "What's in this?" The latter which can lead to a sizable list depending on the recipe.

Sometimes I imagine picky eaters getting jigsaw trapped, but instead of doing horrible things to save their lives, they have to eat food that they dislike. I would like to watch as they gag while bringing the food to their lips, screaming as the clock ticks down to their death, but yet still they can't force themselves to go outside of their culinary comfort zone.

I was allways a pretty picky eater, don't really know why, but I've tried to grow out of it and have succeeded to some extend, though I still have a long way to go. There isn't any enjoyment in being a picker eater since for me at least I would feel I'll, gag or even go as far as vomiting a bit. Also you can't neglect the social consequences of being a picker eater, as I would often have to choose between not eating or gagging through the whole meal. Personally I never had a problem with trying new foods, but if they made me feel sick I would have a difficult time trying to justify continuing eating that food. As I've said I've become more tolerant to more and more food, as I have started cooking my own meals over the years, knowing which ingredients go into the dish and noth being overwhelmed by the taste. But also as often I've discovered that many people are just shit at cooking and make, I would say for the most part objectively disgusting food. Though the one thing I have trouble dealing with in a quite phobic irrational sense is cheese in pure and large portions. I can deal with pizza if there isn't to much or strong tasting cheese and for the most part I can also enjoy a burger with a slice of cheese allthough that was also acquired through the years. One way I can pehaps explain my phobia of cheese is that I can vaguely remember opening up a package of cheese as a young child, I must have been three or four years old, eating and enjoying said cheese, but then out of nowhere someone screamed at me angrily that I should stop and I think since then my relation with cheese has never been the same. Being a picker eater definetly has a lot to do with how you are being raised and parents play a large part which they shouldn't ignore and not just blame the child for having bad manners, they should take responsibilty. Therefore whenever, if ever I have children I'll try to do what my parents couldnt and eleviate my children from the burden that is being a picky eater

I dislike picky eaters, but I can give a theory of why. When I was a child my parents made a big deal out of me trying new foods. Everytime something new was presented they said "atleast try it". I always tried it and I ended up learning a lot about food and appreciating different flavours. Its not like I loved everything, there were plenty of things I disliked, but I was told that its ok to not like things as long as you base your opinion on having tried it atleast once.
Fastforward through an entire childhood where you have tried new things and learned a lot. You're in uni or something cooking a meal for your new roommates. You set the table, pour the wine and serve everyone at the table. Everyone except one person digs in, and you notice.
>Anything wrong with the food? you ask
>I don't like onions, anon
>Oh, well you can scoop them to the side if you dont like them
>Yeah...
That person proceeds to not touch their food all evening, not appreciating the effort you put in to make a nice dinner. Thats when you realize, they never put in the effort to taste new things, they just decided that they didn't like something at the age of 6 and now thats going to haunt the rest of their lives. Its just lazy. You put in the effort at a young age and they didn't and its just a shame. Its just frustrating, what a waste. Challenge yourself, try new things. You might like onions now, you might have grown out of it. I didn't like lasagna all my childhood and I got so much shit for it, and when I grew older I decided to try it again, realizing that my younger self might not have been the genius foodie I thought I was. Lasagna is pretty good now. Just try it, if you still dont like it, fair enough, but atleast try it.

This is one of the hidden secrets to life being destroyed by our government: one of the great “cure-alls” to children’s autistic behavior has always been and will always be bullying. Many unironically retarded behaviors (picky eating, being a social outcast, picking your nose, pooping/peeing yourself, wearing diapers, and so many more) are ultimately corrected not by parents buy by fellow schoolchildren. The grand push to eliminate bullying from schools is in order to push for more autistic, lonely, and ultimately weaker citizens.

>chef is dutch and trained all across europe, absurdly talented with lots of creative ideas, teaches me plenty of new skills
>ask friend out with his gf and my mother for a meal where I work
>he has plenty of money but just orders french fries and refuses to try anything else
I know that might sound petty but it really bummed me out. I don't expect him to like everything, I just wanted him to move out of his comfort zone once for something I cared about.

It's normal for immature children to have very specific and narrow tastes if they get the choice. Meanwhile most of them broaden their tastes significantly once they become an adult. It's certainly linked to maturity. Not getting upset by variations in texture, crunchyness, smell and taste. If nothing else, the ability to stomach it those few times it occurs out of your control to not be a god damn bother to enforce a snowflake attitude unless it literally damages your body.

If you're talking about people who refuse to eat something new without legitimate reasons like allergies, religious taboos, or safety concerns, then yes, it's childish and shows a poor upbringing.
If you're talking about people who refuse to eat something "normal" they know they don't like, it's a little different. If someone invited you over for dinner, you should eat a token amount and make some excuse to beg off if possible. If it's impossible to get away with some excuse and the food is really going to make you sick, I don't think you should have to eat it though. As long as you don't blame the host for your own weakness, it's an unfortunate situation that's nobody's fault.
Now, if you're an extremely picky eater with a long list of foods you won't eat, there's probably something wrong with you that you should at least be aware of and try to fix. You see a lot of actual autism in this thread. I don't know if that's fixable but at least make people aware before they invite you over for dinner.

I used to be one of those onion hating faggots until I an anon on /ck/ calling me a faggot for hating onions. He said that onions are on everything and only dumbass children chose to hate them.

Later that week I ordered a burger and thought about that anon. I usually ordered burgers without onions but that day I decided to give onions a try. Turns out I was just being a childish faggot and just needed to give the taste an honest try.

Turns out most of the stuff I hated as a child I grew out of, except for relish. I hate that shit.
