Don't really think it's very good. It's pretty much a meme in the US because it was associated with bad ass vikings and medieval shit and almost impossible to find. It tastes closer to wine or cider than beer.

Beer is easier, mead is simpler. Beer must has lots of nutrients for the yeast to feed on and you don't need to go higher than a few %ABV before it's "beer". Mead typically goes 12 to as high as 20%, which requires healthy yeast, and the cleaner ideal flavor means there's more chances for off flavors from theyeast to shine through. For mead the yeast you pick can almost be a difficulty level, and you need to age it for a long time, typically a month per ABV%. Both are very good and you can make hydromels, low ABV meads, which which are tasty sooner. Mead takes less equipment typically.
