Beer is easier, mead is simpler. Beer must has lots of nutrients for the yeast to feed on and you don't need to go higher than a few %ABV before it's "beer". Mead typically goes 12 to as high as 20%, which requires healthy yeast, and the cleaner ideal flavor means there's more chances for off flavors from theyeast to shine through. For mead the yeast you pick can almost be a difficulty level, and you need to age it for a long time, typically a month per ABV%. Both are very good and you can make hydromels, low ABV meads, which which are tasty sooner. Mead takes less equipment typically. It's like fine french bread-- a few ingredients with a lot of ways to fuck up, vs beer which is like English sandwich bread-- the sugar milk and butter make it easier to get right. I've made both beer and mead (and all types of bread) many times.
