Yes. It's fucking amazing.
I used to live in Italy and ate it all the time. I even preferred it over beef sometimes.

Idk cultural reasons probably, there's plenty of cultures that don't consume certain meats fire a variety of reasons
Just a reasonable quality, fairly lean meat.

Look, it's worth a try if you're not used to eating it, for the sole reason that you're not used to eating it. It's an ok meat; there's nothing stand-out about it in and of itself. You can make amazingly delicious meals from it, and you can make shit.

This, probably.

My gf thinks I'm a horrible person for having eaten horse and is completely disgusted by the idea. However, when you think about it, there are horses that are bred specifically to be eaten in certain countries. It's the same as any animal bred for food in the United States. It's probably the same situation in Asian countries that eat dogs. At least I hope so. We assume they're eating german shepherds and labs (which I'm sure disgusting mainland chinks probably do) but they're probably stable raised and fattened dogs bred purely for meat.

It's not any weirder than eating cows raised on a farm.

I'm from Quebec, which is the French-speaking province of Canada and I can get it at a moment's notice from the IGA grocery store down the road.

In the rest of the Canada it's still taboo, especially in all the cowboy provinces between here and BC.

The ways I had it, it was fine. As far as taste goes I prefer a regular beef burger or even bison. It's just very obviously lean so it's more /fit/ than /ck/ though I've never had it like japanese sashimi style. Also I used to be a bad cook and the stovetop was all old and fucked up.

Or sometimes they'll do weird things like not carry the normal 10lb white potato bags, but instead sell little gay 1.5lb bags of pre-washed potatoes for fucking 5$. >The legality is historical.
Not really. People were more willing to eat working animals in pre-industrial times. Most oxen were working animals too, most animals in general for utilized for the products they gave rather than bred for meat specifically. This didn't stop people from eating them when their working utility was up. Even the Papal ban (which was more related to cutting down pagan practices than following Jewish kashrut, which was by-and-large ignored in a European Christian context) didn't stop people from doing this. Many European countries have an unbroken tradition of horse consumption from ancient times onward.

Bongland and America are cultural exceptions because both are particularly suited on a climatic level to cattle rearing. Britain has consistent rainy seasons (as any Bong will grumble every single year after summer ends) which leads to consistent grass/hay production suited for oxen and meat cattle, and America/Australia has vast tracts of flat plains and no history of nomadic tradition by the mainline culture (the nomadic native tribes in America had/have a far more favorable history with horse meat than the colonizing Anglo culture).

thanks for this explaination. i'm the belgian anon, we have a tradition of eating old work animals because we've had hard times since about 1830, there wasnt much sustenance to go around, so we'd eat pretty much whatever we could get our hands on and that was economically viable. These days this trend is changing and we're entering USA levels of consumption. Aka, factory farmed meats left and right. My insight in this is, if we're going to eat meat, we need to eat the entire animal. Liver, kidney, all the leftovers. It's the only logical thing to do

It's interesting. In Taiwan, most people from the pre-1960's generations completely refuse to eat beef. Apparently it has to do with how much they valued cows and oxen as work animals on the island. So we have a massive pork and chicken industry to compensate for that and our diet is skewed towards eating those two types of meat + seafood.
Beef is mostly imported from Aussieland though and the younger generations have no qualm about eating it.

Adonis is a PERFECT example of what Metro/IGA could be but aren't. First, yeah, they have horse. They also have affordable lamb and the same kind of specials that the other ones would get on meat. Their produce is just as nice but noticeably cheaper, i.e. green cabbage will be 49c/lb on sale, whereas IGA will sell it for double. Italian tomatoes are 88c/lb right now. And then you go to the cheese counter and that's where you really have a seizure. All your local cheeses are there, same as IGA, except they also have stuff from the charlevoix laiterie. You can get industrial french brie, same as IGA, but why would you. You can also get Bulgarian triple cream sheep feta, so luscious and creamy you could spread it on toast like it's fucking peanut butter. What do you get at Metro? A little plastic tub of dry, crumbly, might as well be plastic cow feta. Hey maybe you're lucky and they're carrying the half cow half goat kind too. Then you go to the deli. Same idea, they have your schneider's products, your cheap watery shitty ham, and it's all cheaper than at Metro. We're talking a cool 8$/lb cheaper when on sale. But you can also get polish ham so dry you can see the muscle striations, PLUS it has the fat still on the outside. STILL cheaper than the shit they brag about being at least 17% protein because guys, we didn't even add that much water, at IGA. Last example: for cheaper than a 284ml of kikkoman, you can get a LITER of Kung-Fu brand soy sauce. Not a joke, that's the actual name. It's Taiwanese. Naturally brewed, same as Kikkoman. Ingredients? Water, soy, wheat, salt, sugar. Same quality. You can find similar examples in every single aisle. Adonis is fucking miles above metro/IGA, and it's infuriating.

the white fantasy cowboy isn't.
the majority of cowboys in the old west were mestizo mexicans and free blacks.

Cowboys were nomadic work seekers who showed up on ranches to assist with drives in exchange for free food and a small amount of cash. The ranchers, millwrights, timbermen, blacksmiths and farmers who actually built the west were white.

The main reason is probably that the number of horses in Europe has been going down in general.
There used to be horses held for farm work into the 50s or so but it's been going down since then. Fewer horses means less meat available for horse butchers.

I have tasted horse and donkey:
>working in a very populated area
>A lot of chinese restaurants
>Start working at 5am and ended at 1pm
>This places are called "chifas"
>There were a lot of them but it seems that all of them are owned by the same people
>one of the biggest "chifas" was next to my workplace
>One time I saw how the chinese received a meat supply at 4:45 am I was very early cause I don't sleep that much
>I was alone in my work with the boss
>you could see that the meat is way darker than regular beef
>Legs are 2 times longer that it should be
>Dude i'm curious as fuck so I go to the roof of my work and see the truck from above
>The truck has no roof and I see a horse head and a donkey tail
>I eat regularly on those places cause they are cheap
>It taste very similar, and the texture of the meat feels more like pork.
>The regular menu (2 dishes + water) cost 2.3 USD

Dogs being "opportunistic" scavenging carnivores make terrible farm animals. Cows on the other hand are an "efficient" (even if they capture 1/10000 of the energy at a given trophic level, in absolute terms it's a lot more than 0 from indigestible grass) biological machine to convert useless cellulose and trace micronutrients into a condensed product for our consumption.
