14881780 No.14881780 [Reply] [Original]

Spent about 30 minutes, hopping from store to store just to find pic related.

It seems like every American beer aside from light or hobo beers has been replaced with hoppy IPA garbage that tastes like bug spray or some eurotrash Chimay/Duvel whatever-the-fuck beer.

What ever happened to a simple cold beer for the men that want to grill and watch the game on Sunday?

This demographic is dying. People who drink now drink spirits or canned cocktails (including hard selzers in this category). People who drink beer are usually nutcases with too much money who hop from microbrew to microbrew, never landing on a mild favorite.
Consider also the restrictions and warnings against drinking that exist now that never existed when the codger spirit was alive and well in the USA.

Some craft breweries do make regular lagers. They tend to have that annoying malty stickiness that lingers in the throat that a lot of cheap European lagers have.

If you find a good lager then cherish it and buy it often.

Coors Banquet is pretty solid. High Life is OK. PBR is a little bit of an acquired taste.

I like Narragansett too

Layabout good for nothing men, aged 30-50, typically from some breed of the tech industry, that don't actually do any work and just spend their whole day out of the office hopping between liquor stores with their pals, trying to find "rare" bourbons (Blanton's, Pappy's, Eagle Rare, etc.)

Noteworthy for being extremely up their own ass despite having done nothing to warrant such behaviors, making a loud nuisance of themselves trying to interrogate every worker in the store on what juicy goods they might be hiding, and also generally not knowing a damn thing about bourbon despite spending all their time chasing it.

bourbon hunters are weird old men who hop from liquor store to liquor store, country to country badgering the clerks at each store for a bottle of 'rare' bourbon.

the problem is that it's all allocated, and distributors will only allocate a single liquor store proprietor if their sales are good enough on the lower-end stock the distributor sells. like, if we buy 10 cases of Wild Turkey 101 and sell those cases completely (and yes, I sell literal 6 packs of 1.75mL's to those stereotypical old guys who are trying to die soon) then we can have a certain number of allocated items - namely, bourbon.

they're only allocated because they're either in short supply, or in too high demand to keep up - and with bourbon and liquor stores, we can't meet the demand that the hype generates only enough for every single person in town to find a tasting bar or restaurant that serves these same bottles and can sell it a %200 markup per shot/glass. so we can't even compete with them to begin with. NOW, after the Indians have dominated the beer game with popular domestics and tobacco as a stranglehold on oil prices with their gas station monopoly, they've taken to opening up liquor stores to meet demand on all item fronts. this means they're also competing for allocated bourbons, and they mark their shit up like %200 as well.
I'm not even kidding.

So you get any number of older men with any number of stories about 'the final piece to their collection', 'a gift for their ___', military personnel, etc., they'll even send in their wives. Reality? Liquor store owners know the value of these products better than you, and they don't just sell it for nothing, they usually save a bottle or two for themselves and family first. So, then there's that. In the end? Bourbon hunters are just another annoying customer to deal with, like trying to sell an off-brand Hennessy or Ciroc to a black guy, or the large group of kids who think if only 1 of them has no ID on them, then no biggie.

they aren't even cream of the crop by the slightest. in almost every major town you can find a Facebook of that city's 'bourbon society' and you can see the members. but here's the interesting part: those are actual members, and those are guys and girls who have ACTUAL collections, within which, is an item that they typically are required to open and allow the higher ups of the society to taste - which is how these societies have tried bourbons as old as America itself - like, 1795's, etc..

Idk if other liquor store Anon has met "that" one guy yet, but I have, and the guy is a friggin' legend. run of the mill factory worker with an ID card using his same picture from decades ago, bourbon hunter, the works. owns guns, chilled at my store for like 4 hours one night just shootin the shit with me about the end times. and oh yeah, he refused the bourbon society's INVITE on condition that he pop open one of his rarities. he told em to fuck off. shows me collection, right? pictures of bourbons he's been storing in a special addition of his house, wall to wall, at least 3 feet in depth, filled with bourbons from decades ago no longer made. multiple bottles of the rarest shit on the market today. all fucking decorated by every piece of bourbon related accessories and decor he can literally get his hands on - like master distiller pins and bourbon barrels, signs..

has a collection appraised at about $300k primary market price. secondary price? pfft. you can see right through these bourbon hunters after you meet 'this' kind of guy. so some are cool. less than some... a smaaaall number.

dude, i have a testicular cancer survivor who's a regular since i started 2.5 years ago. buys a half pint to a pint of patron every single fucking week. he's a surgeon to boot lol.

we ran out of patron one time and i'd put it on my low-no stock report for my boss and when he came by on our shortage i recommended him camarena at more than half the cost.
