What defines 1 drink? If I have a beer that's one, but if I have a zombie, made with a blend of different aged rums, which together add up to about 6oz of alcohol, 2oz of which is overproof? Is that still one drink?

I could drink a whole six pack of overly sweet ciders without realizing but I'd barely feel a buzz from just that, but then I could do 6 shots of tequila and get plastered.

guidelines like this are why people dont take alcoholism seriously. Health agencies trying to convince people who drink hardly anything they have a problem lowers the bar for what people think alcoholism is. You end up with fags drinking somewhat heavily thinking thats what alcoholism is. When I was actually addicted to booze I drank 20 a day minimum

Pretty much every alcoholic eventually goes back to the bottle. You might last days, weeks, maybe even years, but once you’re an alkie, you’re always an alkie. People don’t realize it as it’s happening, but you’re liver is probably fucked up beyond all repair. It happens quickly, and with much lower levels of alcohol intake than people realize. That’s why doctors say maximum three beers a week. Everyone thinks that’s way too low. That’s why most people fuck up their livers. After a certain point, no period of abstinence can bring it back. When you eventually go back to drinking you reward circuitry will make it even harder to stop. I assume you’ve done that several times, so you’re addiction is most likely cemented into your brain. Unfortunately, your alcoholism has also irreparably reduced your mental capacities and IQ, meaning it is also impossible for your to rewire your brain. You ability to learn has also been permanently fucked up. When you start drinking again, you’ll fall into old patterns and you’ll finish destroying your liver within a couple more years. After that you’ll be lying on your deathbed, unable to get a transplant because your damage was entirely self-inflicted.

UK guidelines. 14 units? Units are abv * litres. Thus a 330ml 3% beer is 0.99 units. I think we should resist this 'heavy drinking' definitions. Low, medium, high should be within context of average alcohol consumption not externally defined. At some point they could say ... hey anybody drinking more than 3 beers a week is now a heavy drinker. So then suddenly most people dying of almost anything get this "huh oh well what did you expect they were after all a heavy drinker". It transfers obligation onto individual.

Personally I like to feel a drink and I like to drink, but not every day. I'll go a day or two without drinking and then have two or three strong drinks. Sometimes I'll get a bit wasted, like 5 drinks on a Saturday night. I guess the issue is 'feeling a drink' usually means 6-10 units in one go so I'm likely drinking 18-30 units a week.

Basically severe alcoholic liver disease is often linked to drinking 20-40 grams of ethanol a day for women, or 40 to 80 grams for men, over 10 to 12 years.

2 pints at 4% puts you there. Sad face.

Maybe I didn't explain it correctly.

At the moment most people who haven't had a direct experience with alcohol related health problems would not consider a couple of weak beers a day to be classed as heavy drinking.

Put within context of the behaviour of the majority this level of drinking is for better or worse incredibly common. It would seem unreasonable to label it heavy drinking and maybe would work against the goal of reducing the harms of alcohol consumption.

Most of us know heavy drinkers and it doesn't look like two weak beers a day. Maybe it would be better to discuss the level of incidence amongst different rates of alcohol consumption.

From what I gather studies show 224ml of vodka/whisky/gin per day for 20 years show 50% incidence of cirrhosis. 3.5 pints a day @ 4% abv for 20 years is 50% chance of cirrhosis. Yes that by any definition sounds like heavy drinking to me.

Enjoying a couple of weak beers after work most nights. Developed liver problems. Most would see that as unfair/unexpected/unfortunately. But if you label it heavy drinking suddenly it was their fault.

Imagine if they said that for every 50g meat consumed daily increased your risk of cancer by 18% and suddenly when you or somebody you cared for developed cancer people said "well, you know they were a heavy meat consumer after all what do you expect".

Eating 4oz of meat a day and getting ass cancer is still unfortunate and not something that the individual should shoulder entirely.

it makes mountains out of ant hills for people with slight problems who believe they already have alcoholism. When i would binge drink almost everyday my senior year of highschool I thought hey this isnt that bad I can be drunk all the time and the slight problems will be as bad as it gets. lol someone has a chip on their shoulder

everyone's tolerance and liver capacity is different. there are people who drink heavily for 30+ years, it's entirely dependent on a ton of factors and your diet, age, and so forth.

that being said, it's one of the deepest holes you can dig, but if you can find a way to occupy your time and find a life worth living, you can beat it.

also, a lot of people with liver damage can live relatively normal lives if they don't drink again.
