I flew Qatar and the food was great as well. What threw me was smelling the eggs at what was supposed to be breakfast time on a 14 hour trip. Since I can't sleep on a plane, smelling the eggs after being awake for a whole day made nauseous.

Airline food in the US is shit. Economy class is basically just microwave dinners. First class food is cafeteria tier food plated to look nice.

You are also only served food if the flight is long enough, otherwise you are just given a bag of nuts or some shit.

I have flown with many different airlines and can say certainly that all of American and European airlines are shit and I mean totally shit. The best are Turkish, Emirate and then Qatar.

Always get the vegan meal, you will get your food before every one else sometimes hours before if there's a problem. The meat is shitty anyway, no eggs or butter is a bummer though

The elevation and cabin conditions make your sinus cavities dry up, which drastically reduces your sense of taste. Additionally, they don't have a fully staffed, fully stocked kitchen on the airplane (it's an airplane, not a goddamn restaurant), so everything has to be cooked on the ground and then stored on the plane, which greatly diminishes the quality of the food (especially if there's any kind of delays) and limits the kind of foods they can serve.
Largely, the complaints about airline foods (and flying in general) stem from people flying economy. It's called economy for a reason. If you go for the cheapest option, expect the cheapest results.
