The diet stuff is actually a good drink that quenches thirst. The sugary shit feels and tastes like drinking syrup and just makes me feel like shit for the whole hour after drinking it.

Also 90% of the really morbidly obese people I know drink gallons of it a day. I know correlation /= causation but I guarantee if they just switched to the diet or coke zero options they would lose megapounds

This is called “mom-science” because you heard that caffeine dehydrates you and failed to realize that caffeine diluted in a shitload of water is not the same as pure caffeine. Further, you do not even really know or understand what “dehydrate” means, as it can occur from both a loss of water or a loss of electrolytes. I doubt you have the slightest clue which one caffeine causes.

I find aspartame has this overly sweet undertone to it - It's sweet like the hum of fluorescent lights is treble. Small amounts, like if someone threw some sugar-free whatever in my coffee, I don't mind, but I only enjoy diet cola with a fair amount of sweet liquor, like cheap dark rum or whiskey. I find Stevia less grating, but occasionally it makes me swell up, so I guess I'm allergic.

My point was there is no "real deal" when it comes to soda, or anyone's choice in beverage. If you were drinking an alcoholic beverage strictly for its effects (getting drunk), why drink something like beer when vodka exists? People drink beer for the same reason people drink diet soda, they like the flavor. Artificial sweeteners have a different flavor to "normal" sugars, or in soda's case (at least in the USA), HFCS; they just have the added benefit of having near-zero (or sometimes zero) food energy. I drink soda and prefer zero-sugar versions because I love the flavor of soda and don't have to ingest extra calories while enjoying it.
On the same token I'd grab tequila and mix for a margarita before a beer. Again, flavor.

I don't know about the addict comment, maybe? A lot of people consume soda for caffeine, which I think is odd, but it's possible they're "addicted" to it. And hell, maybe some people that aren't alcoholics (or recovering) buy non-alcoholic beer because, I don't know, they enjoy the taste of beer (for whatever reason, beer is nasty) but don't want to ingest alcohol.

People have different tastes, Anon. There is no "real deal" for things like this.

It depends on the type of zero sugar food (is there just enough sugar to be 0.49Cal per serving?, or is it sweetened entirely with non-caloric sugar substitutes), and the sugar substitute involved (Is it sweetened with glycosides, which will stay and "sludge" or aspartame, which will just leave a film on the pot/crucible you're boiling your drink in?). A substance being flammable also doesn't necessarily mean we can digest it. If it passes through completely intact, nobody's getting energy from digesting it, even if it's possible to use the substance as a fuel.

Actually I'd think the opposite is more true. People are usually caffeinating using coffee / tea / energy drinks which contain roughly double the caffeine as coke / pepsi, and then avoid the soda to avoid getting the jitters or damaging sleep.
That or they move to soda in the afternoons because of the lower dose.

Quite frankly, zero free cola is the worst sugar free alternative. The best in my grocery store is Schweppes Agrum (blood orange). And non cola sodas have no caffeine.

Digging up a random article it seems Aspartame is at least probably not a health hazard for normal people unless consumed a ton. Seems it needs over 10 cans of solely aspartame sweetened drink before anyone starts to think otherwise. As usual you don't know the long term effects.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC520987/

I feel a high sugar intake which correlates to blood spikes and heart disease plus obesity is a far greater danger than drinking much less zero than the article suggests could be a potential hazard. The relatively tiny amount of aspartame needed to achieve similar sweetness to sugar also speak for it. I wouldn't give two shits if any and all soft drinks disappeared over night though. It's just one of many alternatives after all.

I answered a question - does it dehydrate through water or electrolyte loss? The answer is both, especially with large amounts being reintroduced to the system after a desensitization period. Is it going to be medically significant? Not if you're not being a total twat about it. Could you give yourself symptoms of the early stages of dehydration with coffee? Yeah, especially if you're already hungover, sweating buckets at work and drinking coffee instead of water. Would it happen with coffee alone? If you're Dave Grohl.
