We would not have livestock or agriculture without dogs. They were invaluable for both hunting and foraging, and early livestock would never have survived without them in the flock; Europe and the middle east had fucking tigers and lions to contend with in the past, which we have since driven to extinction. No other animal could replace them in that niche.
We would not have developed civilization without a cat equivalent. The greeks used weasels, but eventually switched to cats. Long-term grain storage was impossible otherwise due to pests, and rodents have an instinctual fear of cat odours that passively keeps them away.
