A Mexican place by my house sells this stuff (huitlacoche or "corn smut") in quesadillas. Looks like death and, upon seeing it, my brain sends out the danger signal, telling me that it needs to stay out of my mouth.
Biting into it, though, is magnificent. It's smooth, has the sweetness of corn, but the savory depth of sautéed mushrooms. The big issue is that it can't be cultivated (like truffles or porcini mushrooms) and it looks like poison death, so it's difficult to come by. I'd highly recommend that everyone try it, though. Also, I think I'd heard that, when paired with the corn, it provides complete protein.
