I have experience with ALDI, which competes directly with LIDL in places where both exist, and they do this by cutting operating/purchasing costs, like:

>Carrying only one brand of most basic goods, maybe two
>Negotiating directly with manufactures for special deals in purchasing, which is where those generic LIDL and ALDI brands come from. If they can't get a good enough and they don't need the product, they'll do without.

I'd say Costco in particular has a special status to it, since it is the store of place for the up-and-coming middle class and lower upper class, who particularly have homes and means to buy in mass bulk. It is also seen as keeping the riff-raff out, which both ALDI and LIDL don't give much of a fug about unless they're constantly stealing.
I actually remember when I was a kid and ALDI was first expanding in the states, it was looked down upon for being off-brand, bland in appearance, and thrifty.

The thing with LIDL is that they have easily the least diversity of products compared to other supermarket chains. Want to buy asian ingredients ? Can't. Mexican ? Can't. Your favorite frozen pizza brand ? They don't have it either.
I think that's the main reason why there products are so cheap. Also a lots of things are thought out to reduce cost as much as possible, like putting huge barcodes on products so that cashiers can scan them more efficiently. Finally, the average quality of the products is usually pretty bad, not unhealthy, but bland.
So in any case I'd say it's a better value than more quality focused stores, especially on organic products, but you still get slightly more than what you pay for, so not much.

If you shop during peak hours in the middle of an urban center, maybe.
At mine they'll usually have one lane by default during off-hours, and I'll usually have 0-2 people in front of me. During peak hours (weekends, morning and afternoon), they'll have 3 (and once 4) lanes open, but each one will have lines of ~4 people.

Costco is a bit of a brand name, but their Kirkland Signature line is genuinely very high quality for the price point. I'd shop at Costco if they opened a location in my shithole city but I can't justify having to go to another city to shop for groceries.

Their trick is to invest in developing local food producers into suppliers and to limit the brands on choice. So you don't have 10 types of frozen waffle brands to chose from. You have one locally produced that is of decent quality,that supplies exclusively to Lidl.
In 20 years you'll have them in every state supplying locally produced quality food at good prices.
