smash burgers are way overrated. yes, I want some crisp/sear on my burger, no, I don't want it to be the only flavor. a good burger has that but more importantly has good beef flavor, the kind you get when you properly cook beef (read: not overdone).

Good browning, but not necessarily good juiciness. But, I prefer charcoal or grill, where there's a bit of smoke flavor, and char, ideally, and frankly, they won't be paper thin like a smashburger. It is a mood more than preference. A steakhouse burger from a high quality restaurant will have a great oak grilled burger.
I will take a Shula burger over a smashburger, just for instance.

Do you get your chuck and brisket and medium rare too? fucking lol. Serious question, what exactly is the appeal of rare to medium cooked ground beef? I've never understood it. Steaks make sense. I like a nice, tender rare cooked steak. Ground meat doesn't really benefit a lot from cooking it rare, though. You can cook it all the way through easily without drying it out and it stays tender because it's ground.

You can get a good sear and still have some pink in the middle if you're not afraid of a little heat. I don't judge people who stop at medium, but this smashed fad is like, "hurr, the charred part is the best, so we'll just make it all charred and overcooked and then layer on just as much cheese and that will make it okay to choke down a few old hockey pucks".
