What is the difference between these two?
No idea, but about to find out.

Also, canned fish thread in general.
What do you guys put on your sardines or eat them with?

Sardines + Chipotle Tabasco sauce + crackers
bonus: small dash of good mayo

Slight difference in taste.

One on the left actually does taste more like spring water, interestingly enough. The one with just water on the right taste like it has filtered water. The one on the left, the Pure Spring Water one taste ever so slightly saltier than the one on the right, the just water one.

I'm not entirely sure which I prefer.

But why even make both of these products?
Interestingly enough, King Oscar doesn't even advertise the one with Pure Spring Water on their website at all.

I almost never buy the ones in water.
I only buy sardines in olive oil, for the most part. They taste better and have better texture imo.

This is what I've got for now

Have never tried salmon from a can.
Not as healthy, I imagine, although I figured I'd try it once, at least for reference.

KO Mackerel is damn delicious, both the olive oil and mediterranean flavors.

Bela Sardines are good + have probably the best well designed can I've ever seen for sardines, perhaps ever

Short answer is yeah, definitely.

Look at how much omega-3 is packed in each of my cans of sardines and mackerel.

I buy the KO Mackerel with olive oil perhaps most frequently, and it's 3500mg of omega-3 per can.
That + no more smoking has, personally, greatly increased my cognitive abilities.

I would guess that one is filtered spring water and the other is in distilled water. The spring water might have some small amount of minerals in it which might explain why it seems a little salty. I can't think of why they'd make both other than to have very neutral sardines available or maybe get around some weird import/export laws.

Mareblu is a cheap supermarket brand. Those mackerel fillets are still produced in Portugal, not other shittier countries in the mediterranean area.
Callipo is an historical calabrian canned fish company. Probably the best widely available tuna brand in Italy. It's more expensive than the average supermarket brand, but not gourmet-food-shop-expensive.
Fratelli Carli is another historical brand based in Liguria. The company only sells directly to the consumers door to door with its own delivery vans. You can't find them in stores.
Their flagship product is olive oil, but they also sell other oil-related products like canned foods.
Good but IMO overpriced. My grandma gave me those because she is a loyal consumer of their.

It probably started as a meme, but in all honesty they're great. Extremely cheap, quite healthy, basically never expires, and versatile.
And they're delicious. Most of us who hadn't taken the deenzpill yet were skeptical, and most of us who finally bought a can on a whim were hooked. Meaty, pleasing texture, not funky or unpleasantly fishy tasting, filling, and a good energy boost.
Then add in the fact there's so many brands, flavours, and deenz-adjacent canned foods, there's relatively plenty to talk about. I also have a sneaking suspicion the vast array of packaging artwork adds a bit of a collectable vibe to them, with people liking to share their rare deenz

Saw picrel at my local grocer. I wasn’t familiar with the brand. Thought they were in seasoned oil, but on closer inspection of the ingredient list I think it’s a seasoned tomato sauce. Going to try them after work.

Christ they’re expensive. 4.99CAD compared to the 2.99CAD I normally pay for deenz. Not bad on the overall deenz price spectrum but the can is quite small at 120 grams. I’m probably going to eat them on some toasted sourdough, rubbed with a clove of garlic, and maybe a little cream cheese or something too. Might just go deenz and garlic sourdough though.

Heavy metals and other contaminants are highly concentrated in top-order consumers like tuna and swordfish because they bio-accumulate from everything they've ever eaten- which have bio-accumulated from everything that fish has ever eaten, which... it's exponential.

Sardines are bottom-order consumers that only eat plankton. They barely have any contamination(not to say it's none at all.)

update: These were not good deenz. When I opened the can, I got blasted with a pungent fishy odor. Some fish smell is to be expected, but these were particularly strong. In terms of flavor, they were as fishy as they smelled. I generally expect a savoury flavour with a fishy finish, but these were very fish-forward. The smokiness and salt levels were both good though, present but not over or underwhelming. The texture was disappointing. Very very firm, where the meat would sliver into small, hard pieces about the size of a pencil tip. I couldn't eat them on their own, I had to mush them into a deenz salad and eat it as a spread on toasted sourdough to dilute the nastydeenz flavor. I also noticed on the can that while the fish were canned in BC, they were caught in Malaysia.

I normally buy Brunswick as my go-to cheap deenz (picrel) - despite the soi oil meme these fish are quite good quality for their price, and caught off the east coast of Canada. Raincoast deenz were about 50% higher priced, with a significant reduction in quality, and are not caught "locally". Will not buy again for sure. If I had never had good deenz I wouldn't mind these guys, but the disparity between price and quality was a real letdown

They marked down these deenz to just a buck fifty a tin, they're usually like 4.50. I thought it was an error at first. Very excited to try them, someone here posted that they're top-tier.
Also grabbed some KO Mediterranean style, and the weird Goya big tin of sardines in tomato sauce just on a lark

Yes, I like canned mackerel. As for health, just pay attention to where they're caught. Usually the canned varieties are young Atlantic mackerel which haven't accumulated a lot of heavy metals. King Mackerel has high mercury content, but they're not sold canned.

Yes, unless somehow a can got through the production line without being heated. The canning process was invented specifically to keep food stable for as long as possible and there are examples of canned food from the 19th century that have not undergone any biological rotting, and have just desiccated.
The most likely defect is a punctured can, which will be noticeable because both the fish and oil will smell utterly rancid, and there won't be any pop when opening the can.

Stored in the average pantry, which isn't climate controlled, the temperature fluctuations and other shit can affect the taste and texture without necessarily making the product unsafe. For cans, it's almost always just a guideline, especially for the retailer. A can that has been bouncing around warehouses for 2 years may well have been punctured or something.
But a can that is promptly sold and sits in a cool space for years without being moved on pallets by a forklift is almost certainly fine.

Mussels are fine. Indistinguishable from oysters if they're smoked, imo. The flavor is more about the smoke than the actual seafood. Like smoked oysters, smoked mussels, and smoked deenz only vary in texture as far as I'm concerned. Because the cost is the same, I tend to eat fresh mussels and smoked oysters (although I eat both in both styles)
I personally generally avoid canned mussels and oysters due to concerns (that are based entirely on my uneducated notions - I don't know if there's anything to this) regarding bioaccumulation.
However, I do eat fresh mussels and oysters fairly regularly. I don't logically see a reason why they would be any better than canned in terms of absorption of mercury and various toxic chemicals. I suppose you can make the argument that because they are smaller, you're likely to eat more of them smoked. I generally eat 6 fresh oysters, and a tin of canned smoked oysters is usually around 12. So perhaps there's more toxicity overall, even if the toxicity per oyster is roughly the same
