How do you like to make your rice and beans?

If you don't like rice and beans, then share your poverty meals, I guess.

beans and rice is my favorite staple food
i like them best stewed like in creole cooking. i have no real preference for beans to rice ratio or mixed-in-or-on-the-side bullshit, just depends on what's available or who's cooking

pic rel some basic new orleans red beans, it's more like a stew than a rice dish

Is there a generally agreed upon way of making the beans? Everything I find online is written by whites afraid of spice

Even in Jamaican rice and peas, you don't use much more than the classic "wypipo spices" like thyme, allspice, salt and pepper. If you're fucking looking at poverty meals, stop complaining about not having enough spice.

oh yeah I have something similar for you. We call it beaten beans in Romanian
Let beans soak overnight
Boil it in separate water you retard (15 min I guess)
Drain (if you're really a neet with free time on your hands, you can peel each bean individually for nicer texture. if you choose to do that, don't drain all the way. don't do that though retard)
fry some onion
afterwards add some carrot and whatever other root vegetable you like (not potato retard)
after they go soft add the beans
add some more hot water so they stew for like an hour or so
add mince garlic
blend
wala
you can top with a tomato based sauce of your choice (usually just fried onions with some tomato paste)

onion, bell pepper celery mirepoix
beens (presoaked is better)
seasoning meats are pretty varied, people use smoked pork shanks, feet, neck bones, turkey necks/wings, saltpork, pickled pork, beef tips, tail, shanks or knuckles
cover in water and let it go til your meat is falling apart
throw in a sachet of whole peppercorns and alspice
bundle some fresh thyme, oregano and bay leaves
season to taste with salt and cayenne pepper
right before you take it away from the heat, stir in freshly minced garlic
some people add grated ginger, but it's not traditional. restaurants add worschestershire to the initial cooking liquid for a more whole flavor, but it's not really necessary
serve with steamed rice and thinly cut green onions, diced white onions also optional. warm french bread is nice also

it's not a notoriously complex dish, a lot of people just season it with onions and salt pork and call it a day. still delicious, imo. i forgot to mention that it IS mandatory to offer pepper vinegar or louisiana hotsauce as a condiment, but if you have to ask for it the game is already fucked up

Depends on what I have on hand since beans & rice is usually what I make if I don't have anything else or I'm feeling lazy. I recently ran across some of the Brit style baked beans in the import aisle at the grocery store and put them over some brown rice I'd made earlier that day. It was pretty good but not at all what I expected. Very heavy on the tomato.

My poverty meal of choice is poutine with oven fries. Gravy and potatoes are both cheap as fuck, if you make a good fry seasoning, they're absolutely delicious. Curds are optional depending on level of poverty.
