What is your favourite, and what is your go-to at the shop? For me, spiced is my favourite and I will generally buy Red Leg or Sailor Jerry's, but I have a soft spot for Havana Especial. I'm not very much into Navy or white rum, though.

Stop drinking sugary alcohol and get some real rum. Agricole rum is pretty good. Jamaican pot still rum is also great. The banana, gasoline, vanilla funkiness of it is interesting and delicious.

I only drink rum neat, so I can't really help you with that. A good aged rum can stand its own against a quality scotch.
If I had to choose something I'd look for a white agricole rum. They use sugarcane juice rather than molasses.

Around 500 bucks. Compared to other bottles in the price range it's what you'd expect in terms of complexity, texture, etc. A nice balance between refinement and that funk of a good jamaican pot still rum.
