I've tried surstromming, had it the proper way with flatbread, red onion, cream cheese etc.
It does smell fucking awful and takes some mental effort to eat something your brain is telling you has gone rotten
It smells worse than it tastes, and tastes kind of like a slimy anchovy but less salty, but also 100X more fishy and pungent
Ate the whole flatbread, didn't make a big fuss out of it like you see on youtube but I also would not eat it by choice again, it's probably the worst 'delicacy' I've ever tried and I've tried my fair share e.g. balut, hakarl, puffin liver, various insects etc.
