I shop both there and at edeka (higher class supermarket chain in germany). And I can tell firsthand that aldi stuff doesn't agree with me as well. The bread makes my stomach itch (slightly), the cheese burns (slightly) in my mouth, I feel (slightly) unwell from gorging myself on the sausages. Everything is just a little bit... strange and everything tastes a little bit worse. And their sauerkraut is too sour, but that's just my preference. I guess their fresh produce is fine, but because of all the other things I don't shop there any more.

Aldi is fine. A fair bit cheaper but a little limited for choice. Some stuff great other stuff less so. It is actually pretty noticeable how small the frozen shit section is here, like two half isles. The fresh produce is twice that, the refridgerated shit is 5 half isles. We shopped Tesco for a year due to covid and it was about 50% up but part is the extra choice. A typical Aldi is like 25% of the size of a proper supermarket here.

Your view on Aldi is a litmus test for how old someone is

They sold real, honest to god generic food all the way up until the mid 90s.
You would walk in and grab a grease pen at the front door.
You would grab tin cans with NO LABELS, and you would write with the pen the price of the food and what it is on the can.

It took them 30 years longer than everyone else to use barcodes.
At this point they still only straight Cash and food stamps/EBT/WIC
It took them till like late 00s to accept debit card, and only 2016 did they start accepting credit cards.
Every step of the way, every decision they have ever made was to overwork their cashier/stocker/truck unloader, and minimize the cost of the product and store.
This includes selling the shittiest of generics they could find.

It was THE store to go to if you are on foodstamps and ride the bus. And since you are a poor motherfucker without a bank account and have horrible credit, the debit card/credit card thing didnt matter.
It was about one step above getting food at a food bank.

Looking at aldi now that they have revamped and changed their store in the last 5-6 years.
Sure its not the same slum that it was 10-15 years ago.
But now its just a store filled with Kroger store-brand levels of food, for the same price or MORE than Kroger. All without the option of the name brand right beside it.
I dont go in there because its not cheaper, and there is less choice.
There is no real reason to go in there.

You need to pay much closer attention to how much per ounce you are paying.

I say this as someone who also routinely shops Dollar General for food.
They built a brand new one like 3 minutes down the road in my residential area, closer than any of my grocery stores.
I justify the extra price because there are never big lines, and its just convenient being so close.

The new model of Dollar General has pretty much turned half of the whole store into food while downsizing their crappy consumer goods section.
Its only a "dollar store" by name, its a full blown mini convenience store at this point. Their selection of dollar store goods will continue to dwindle.

>Other grocery stores actually shoo the homeless away.
Not my experience.
In particular localities, most homeless just put in at least the bare amount of effort to avoid getting shooed out of the various chains of stores in particular areas. You have to be sleeping/not sober/argumentive/violent to get the police called on you, since whatever security they may have there aren't doing shit themselves unless it is a small local shop. If you aren't causing a problem beyond looking homeless, there effectively isn't a problem for any store operating there.
"Nice" stores and actually restrictive stores like Costco tend to be outside of those areas anyway, because they aren't putting up with the liability and their customers can drive to them.

Anyway, when I lived somewhere kind of ratty with an ALDI I was never asked by anyone to have my cart returned, but I can see someone doing it for the change. I guess it's a problem in the sense of asking for change, but in this case there is a service being performed.

I have, just either suburbs or much smaller. Everywhere I've lived it's just seems like there is either no grocery stores with a homeless issue, or all stores in the area have some homeless issue. The main pushback/gatekeep seems to be geography, and secondly city policy. Whatever individual stores do doesn't seem nearly as decisive, unless again it's something like Costco. 4. employees are miserable at aldis and this makes me feel stressed out because they are understaffed and overworked and rushed. It is nice that they have work ethic but the line doesn't move all that much faster vs other stores, the people working there just seem more stressed.

5. fruit and veg section is a joke, not enough organic options and jokingly expensive when it is for a store that's supposed to be a better deal

6. frozen section is a sick joke. tiny little packages that scale up price wise to be a worse deal. I want to buy big packages that area a good bulk deal not little bags of organic corn and peas so small they can only feed a tiny mouse.

the whole premise of aldi as a store defeats its own purpose and it needs to be seriously overhauled so that it becomes a good deal in THIS reality. not in their imaginations. That being said I'm glad it exists, just needs to stop sucking so bad. Why wouldn't I just go anywhere else with real good deals and products I want?

>go to morrisons

>go to asda
holy fuck why did it come to £300 ... oh yeah I bought a bunch of clothes and some cookware jesus this place is the size of an airport. It is filled with fat white unemployed thicko scumbag cunts.

>go to tesco
holy shit two weeks worth of food cost me £110 yeah fair ok some is ok, a lot is not great. Ruled by large affluent asian families pushing three trollies and blocking off the reduced to clear two hours early.

>go to aldi
two weeks of food cost £65 and I am going to eat like a polish day labourer every day because all I got were staples. Some stuff is good, some not so good. The wine range is good and tightly focused. Filled with homeless looking ethnics, people who smell like shit, alcoholics, really busy and feels like I'll catch TB.

>go to lidl
Like aldi but I spend more because they have a large range of random weird items and stuff like frozen lobster which I buy out of boredom with the rest of the range. Different stuff is good and bad compared to aldi. The packaging is all heavy duty/thick seems wasteful. Not as busy as aldi, but maybe not as good. The wine range is sprawling and clumsy, who the fuck need four different types of sub £5 SA chenin blanc to chose from, the whole place feels a little weird in terms of choice of offering, sporadic basic goods (for here) but 25 types of luxury belgian biscuits. One instant coffee but 6 types of fresh whole beans. Weird bakery/patisserie section. 8 different craft gins but one basic one. Feels a bit like a shit morrisons in places. The place isn't very busy and seems to mostly be clean and presentable white working poor.

at least your state allows them to sell alcohol. only grocery store here that sells alcohol is kroger and they had to build a separate partition of the store that you can only access by going back outside to get to that door.

>Being this proud of having an Aldi's

Yucko. I'd rather have a superior Trader Joe's where you don't have to pay for a cart, they bag groceries for you AND they have enough staff working there.

checked and based. another reason why i hate the self service machines is they are built in such a way where you pretty much have to be a robot(or npc) to use them correctly without them breaking. they are machines built by machines for machines. fucking soulless junk.

All the shit that's wrong with grocery stores is why I just started paying my mom to get groceries for me. She likes to shop around, and she knows every fucking body so it's her time to socialize, she makes a little extra cash, and I don't have to put up with bullshit. I only ever go when I'm going to make chili or something, because I like to pick the meats and peppers myself, as I take making chili way too seriously.

im a carer for my mum so its my job to go out and do shit for her(us) like shop but she also needs to keep fit so we walk to the shops and shop together and we only shop at aldi, sometimes she needs stuff that is only available at one of the other stores that i fucking hate so i will just wait outside while she goes in and gets it quickly.

If supermarkets couldn't sell alcohol the entire country would plummet into chaos and sobriety. The government would never do something so suicidal.

Something like 70% of this state is still "dry." No booze in grocery stores, but beer is okay. Only two cities allow alcohol sales on Sunday, and only for a few hours in the afternoon. Heart disease, diabetes, and complications from oral infections are the top three killers here, yet the state consumes twice as much Mt. Dew as they do water. But like, we've got guns and it's okay to say nigger in public still, so everybody's pretty happy.

Sounds like hell. I remember being in Norway and being shocked that they don't let you buy alcohol after 6pm. Here it's very common for supermarkets to be packed at 10pm with people buying bottles of the cheapest rum and vodka. I have zero planning skills and would die where you live.

>Sounds like hell
It really is. There's a small town about 15 miles from where I live that took a vote a few years ago. Damn near the whole town voted to allow alcohol sales for the first time ever. Despite that fact, more than half the town showed up every day with bibles at the one liquor store to protest and shame anyone that dared to go in and buy anything. At the time I was working at a liquor store in my town, and the people from there would still drive here to buy alcohol and take it home so that the neighbors wouldn't see. Now mind you, everyone under 60yo in that county is addicted to meth, pain pills, and heroin. Lucky for me I'm in one of the better parts, university town, alcohol sales except on Sunday, but there's a city another 15 or so miles from here that sells on Sunday if you don't plan ahead, and the drug addicts we do have mostly keep to themselves in their shitty rural ghettos.
