Pannetone is honestly one of the worst Christmas traditions I've ever tried. It's incredibly dry, very bland, and just tastes mildly like raisins.

The Borsari panettone is really good.

The raisins are soft and moist, the candied orange peel are delicious.

There is a wonderfully sour and complex taste to the panettone, which is sweet in the right amount.

The bread itself is soft and moist.

Comparing it to my old friend, Bauducco, I'd say it's obviously better and more complex, but it's not like it's a water to wine comparison.

This one would get a 10, whereas Bauducco traditional would get a 7.

The lemon Bauducco one was truly horrible, though. Almost no lemon flavour, the bread was dry and there was almost no fruit in it.

First time ever having it.

It is FUCKING AMAZING. The orange zest flavor brings out a freshness. The fruit is tender and juicy. The cake itself is moist and wholly flavorful. It has a crumbly topping that is sweet and some almonds.

It really blew me away. 1000% better than fruitcakes I've had. I spent $40 on a fruitcake, and $20 on this. This blows it outta the water.

Did I just get a good brand? I've been reading some are dry or tasteless. This is supremely good.

Guys, I'm sorry. I bought three separate 'tone this year, and I splurged on two of them (40 and 50 bucks respectively). They were just not good. Did I just fuck up by buying non traditional style ones? The cheap one was chocolate and it was dry and chemical tasting. The second one was a pistachio creme one that was a lot better, but too busy and the white chocolate was overpowering and annoying to eat. The third and most expensive one was a chestnut and chestnut cognac creme one that also tasted chemical af, but was moist. I really don't care for it at all; I just opened it right now and will post pics.

I've had the traditional style one before and thought it just tasted like stale, less dense fruit cake. That was a cheap brand, though. What gives, guys? Is it just a shit food after all? Why does it smell so sour and taste so wrong?

Non traditional panettone can be a hit or miss, I found that pistachio ones (especially those filled with creams) can be too sweet, so probably the first time you should just start with a traditional one and then see if you like it.
Personally I never buy ‘tones filled with creams or chocolate, it’s safe to buy the ones with alternative fruits (berries, pineapple, pear, apricot, etc..) and infused with particular aromas (like limoncello).
Still I can’t explain how you experienced a chemical taste with a sour smell. I mean panettone has a sweet flavour, if anything you should taste vanilla and orange zest (and it’s made with orange paste which isn’t chemical at all).

Maybe you got a fucked up product, I don’t know, or maybe it’s just not your thing.

The pistachio was definitely too sweet, but the dough was the best on that one. I can't describe the sour/chemical aspects other than maybe there's an ingredient in the dough I'm not familiar with. It's really offputting--maybe it's a preservative or something that I'm sensitive to? I'll give 'tone two more chances, even though I'm in for 100 bucks so far. First chance will be a mid range traditional style, and the second chance will be splurging on a locally made one or making one myself. I hope I can find someone who likes these a lot so I can give away the expensive one.

I love bread and pastries, but 'tone seems to have nothing about either that I like. There is a complete absence of delicious bread-y aroma or taste.

One of my comfiest memories ever involve panettone.
It was the Christmas holidays of 2011, I was on a vacation break from the university and I was at home playing video games until late at night in my room.
I had just purchased LA Noire on steam during the winter sales and every night I would play one or two story cases while eating a slice of panettone followed by a Leffe Radieuse beer (I bought a box of these for last years Eve), and outside it was cold and snow.

As stupid as it may sound, that was the happiest time in my life. Just video games, panettone and beer.
Now I can’t even watch tv or play anything because I suffer from dry eye syndrome from 3 years…I’m so sad bros…

It was very good.

I tested all the Tiri’s panettone except the apricot + gianduja chocolate that was new for this year, and I can say that the for me their best ‘tone is the coffee and white chocolate. Very close second place the salted caramel one.

2021 was Tiri’s year, but next Christmas I’ll buy 3 different artisanal ‘tones so I can test 3 different famous bakeries.

I seriously hope that some Americanon will buy a panettone from Roy and reviews it for us.
