Whats the fucking deal with this cheese?

The orange annatto rind doesn't seem to add any flavor, and its otherwise just a bland, unimpressive semisoft cheese. My girlfriend keeps coming home with it and just shrugs when I ask why. Is there anything Muenster is good for?

It totally depends on the brand you buy. Some are very much flavorless and seem like its key ingredient is plastic goo. Go to an higher end shop or a proper deli and you can get some that are so fucking tasty that I don't use other cheeses in my sandwiches.

There is no such thing as orange cheese. Its just food coloring

What makes it good? Does it have a stronger/nuttier flavor from the annatto? I've had good red leicester that blew me away and I think the "red" color comes from the same stuff as muenster, just not sure to what extent it provides flavor vs. color

Probably just food coloring in >>17429150 but it's supposed to come from pic related and has nothing to do with oranges

Its a rich nutty flavor. It also melts really well.

I think the main problem you're facing is you're buying the cheap mass produced shit that looks like craft singles. Try one that is made the more traditional way (picrel)

its bussin for grilled cheeses or melt sandwiches when you have another cheese to compliment

I was always taught that's munsters purpose, to form a bed of flavor for a harder/sharper cheese to sit upon

yeah that's definitely fair, I'll go to a cheesemonger and give a quality muenster its fair shake.

I will still say though, that grocery store aisle cheese of other varieties are all far more interesting and valid than grocery store muenster.

>>17429242
this makes sense. I could see it going well with gruyere or even a sharp cheddar

Only thing i use it for is venison burgers once in a while. Leftovers go in omelettes.

muenster is fantastic for melting
shredded is great on pizza too
burgers and sandwiches toasted with a few slices on top
like other have said, quality is variable and heavily affects flavor

Muenster is a fantastic choice when its included in your grocery store brand at bargain prices. Usually you get crap like mild cheddar, skim mozzarella, Monterrey jack. But occasionally they will include Muenster in this "3 for $5" class, where its a must buy. Its a step up from crap tier cheese, even in its cheapest form.

See >>17429275
That's because Muenster is an ersatz cheese, the goal of the annatto is to mimic the rind on the real cheese, and this one certainly isn't bland

>> No.17429454

don't be talking shit about muenster

>> No.17429695

>>17429410
so Muenster is just an imitation version of Munster made in US vs France? And the annatto's sole function is to mimic rind, rather than add any flavor?

That sounds pretty Bad

I fucking love muenster cheese. Some anon here suggested making a pizza with it as the cheese

it could be worse, they could have put sawdust in it like most american cheeses.
